to day i went out and she was the worst yet im just gonna do a list of things that it has done and then if anybody knows what the problem is let me know but to be honest it looks like i need a new carb which i can no way afford at the moment so her goes

1, she back fires (this is a new problem)
2, i can smell fuel strongly when she cuts out
3,there is a tick tick noise coming from the carb (can show a pic of where if needed
4, you have to keep the engine above 2000 rpms to stop it stalling
5,temp gauge stays at around 3/4
6 she can pull herself when in drive but when you put your foot down she starts to cough and splutter
i think thats about it. please somebody have a quick fix for me

This new problem sounds like it could be ignition related. Check distributor cap and rotor, then plugs and leads.

Hmm, I've never seen a dud BMW ignition lead, but I have seen a few defective new parts, so I'd check them again. Also check they're the right parts. It's a long time since I ran an M10 on the road, although I've got a breaker here, but, IIRC, the direction of the distributor rotation changed at some point, and the cap and rotor design changed.

Not unless there's obvious damage to the lead.
I've a 318 M40, that I use every day, that hasn't a trace of the heatshield left. (I think the previous owner trimmed the remains away to tidy it up for sale).
Hasn't cooked the leads in 20,000 miles.

If the car's in the condition he says it is appearance wise, and it's got all the new bits he says, then assuming you didn't pay over the odds for it, then you've good yourself a good buy.
It has one fault with it. When you buy a second hand car, you usually buy several faults along with it, but it sounds like (after disregarding all the bul***it in the advert), that most of them have been sorted, except for one important one. Sort that and you're laughing.
The 318i of mine that I mentioned above was the last car I bought as a private sale, and that turned out to have a similar problem, which of course was why the PO was selling it.
This car would suddenly cut out as you were drving and refuse to restart. I soon diagnosed this as a duff electric fuel pump in the tank.
Once this had been replaced, i had a car in first class order, which hasn't missed a beat in the four years I have been driving it.

It says the carb was replaced, but it doesn't say by what.
Could have been another equally clapped out one, a carb totally unsuitable for the car, or the correct carb, not properly set up.
What make of carb is on it?

Original was a Pierburg in mine, but Ithink another make was used as well.
The replacement should be a Webber with a manual choke cable fitted.
Webber symbol is a big W.

Have you cleaned out the jets in the carb mate? also check that the fuel pump is not loose on the head. these 2 problems ment mine was doing the same as yours.

Do you have a manual choke cable in the cabin? if its an auto choke then its most probably sticking.

If your after a weber replacement car ive got one comming off my car if your interested.

its towards the front of the engine on the same side as the carb. its the round thing that sticks out just after where the coolant pipes are.

brian and si316 i think my car has a major problem. this is what happend i went out to see what carb i had it was a pierburg by the way and sussed out that the carb looks like it has had a new auto choke. well i started the car and when she cut out loads of smoke and fuel came out of the top of the carb so i put her all back together again cause i had to go see a mate. so i was coming back home when i noticed the temp had gone above 3/4 and started to touch the red. so pulled off from some traffic lights and up a hill and then it was like the car lost all drive i put my foot down and the engine dident respond it was like it had no go but was still running so after a few tries it went luckily i was almost home and got back no probs but i think the engine has had it what do u think guys or any one else

Was the coolant level OK when it began to overheat?
A weak mixture will produce extra heat.
Difficult to diagnose things from a distance, but I still feel that Pierburg is at the root of the problem. Difficult to believe that someone has put a new Pierburg on it. Does it look new ?

no mate but the choke looked new im assuming that the coolant levels are ok because it has not long had a new rad but i have no way of checking so its not the head gasket then mate?? could it be the fuel filter??
