A good friend of mine has an E36 316i compact and it has just developed a fault. Basically the clutch pedal stayed sunk to the floor as he changed gear. It recovered itself slightly and it just about drives, but the clutch pedal is very heavy and the bite point very low.
Any ideas?

This is a complete guess, but...
Maybee the seals have gone on the master cylinder on the back of the clutch pedal?
I'm only saying this as when i used to own an e30 325i SE, the car had the same problem.
It was possible to overcome it by pushing the clutch pedal fast & not resting your foot on it. If you did rest your foot on it, it would eventualy sink all the way to floor, with the clutch still engaged.
As i first stated, i could be entirely wrong with this, as maybee the e36 1.6 compact doesnt have a hydraulic clutch?

Tis hydraulic. Turns out the clutch itself has gone, has a nice crack in it!
