rear wheel bearings

hi guys
finally got an e30,




only thing it needs is a rear wheel bearing
i was wondering can these bearing be changed without special tools or will i have to pay to get it done at a bm garage/dealer?
i know a mobile mechanic and he says he can do it
but i would rather check with you guys first

let the professionals do it?
or
let mr (i know everything)mobile mechanic do it?

it is a ball ache of a job, if the mobile mechanic says he can do it and you trust him then go with your instinct

well its my first e30
my daily driver is an e36 that gets left in the street that i dont care about
but the e30 is so good and genuine i just dont trust anyone on it
but if its a pig to do i`ll just get my local dealer to do it then at least they know what their doing (i hope)
any idea how much pennys it would be in the ££dealer££

If you change the bearing then (ffs) change the backplate at the same time if it doesn't look mint.
The ease of the job depends how easily the axle slides out of the hub. Sometimes they just don't.

try and seek out your local independent BMW specialist, you'll get totally raped by the dealer at £100+ per hour labour.

Wheel bearing you can get from a local motorfactors, shouldn't be more than £25 each and that's dear, any discount and could be less. Backplates are a Dealer part at about £15 each

i got a bearing for £23 from my local motor factors
googled for independents in sussex one that stands out is thwaites
it would be good to know if any one in here knows any other local specialists in sussex

I made a tool to do mine with, a piece of studding, a metal plate and some nuts from work and part of the subframe bush tool i made.
It can be a pain of a job but mine came out ok with no probs.

the mobile mechanic that seems to think he knows everything has quoted £40
but the way he talks i dont think he knows whats involved in the job,,,
and how long would it take to do,,

He probably thinks it is a simple wheel bearing like the ones you get on the rear of front wheel drive cars. Print a picture off realoem for him and he'll soon realize that he's not doing that for £40. I wouldn't do it for less than £100 a side but that would be genuine bearings as some people have said the GSF and ECP bearings don't last more than a year.

thats genuine bearing at £110 lol

so im going to try a local classic car garage and see if they can help

£110 for a bearing, oh how I laughed.

It's probably the same SKF bearing that's £20 at the local motor factors
