Hello Zoners....I am contemplating an engine swap. I s this a good idea?
2.0 for a 2.5. Can you just swap the enine and ecu...and thats it? Or do you need to modify the rear axel, gearing anԚ´all?
Any help/suggestions would be cool! 8)

Any "swappers" out there with good/bad experiences?

Anders.

Hi Anders, My 320i now has a 2.7 under the bonnet with 325i running gear.

The 2 and 2.5 engine loom and radiator are the same.

You could just swap the complete engine over and fit a 325i ECU and airflow meter and it would work fine.

However, the 325i gearbox and diff are beefier than the 2 litre items so I fitted those. The 325i gearbox uses a different propshaft from the 2 litre so this would be needed too.

Also the 2.5 clutch is slightly different from the 2 litre although you'll probably get that with the engine.

The 2 to 2.5 swap is a million times simpler than a 1.6/1.8 to 2.5 swap as i found out recently :(

Cheers,

The difficulty of swap depends on what engine do you have - there were 2 types of 2,0 - with Jetronic and Motronic. 2.5 all were motronics. So if your 2.0 is also the motronic then no probz, otherwise you'll have to mess with the wiring loom.
320 with motronics are after the facelift (after 10.87).
Also i'd suggest to change the rear suspention to the one with disc brakes (if you don't have ones already)
Cheers

Hello Guys...I am still a bit nervous about this! :( The mechanic I am talking to says that the hole rear axel has to go...is this true? My 320i
is an 88 model with disc brakes on the rear....and then there is the DIFF question.....what comes with what???? 3.91...3.64...3.73...I do ALOT of
highway miles!!! How do I know hich is which?? :?

With rising frustration.......

Your mechanic is not explaining things to you properly.

You dont really have to change the rear axle at all.

Leave it as it is and the car will be a monster. However is will rev very highly on the motorway.

Fit a 3.73 diff and that will give you good all round acceleration and good engine speeds at high speed cruising.

Hope this helps.

Hey M5pilot...thanks....ok...how do I know when a car has an 3.73 diff..or
any other diff for that matter? How do you check this?
If you purchase a regular unmodified 325i/89...what would the diff be?

Is that "monster" as in "bad" or "good"?

If you crawl under the back of the car, there should be a metal tag under one of the diff rear cover bolts.
Polish this up with a bit of emery cloth, and you should be able to read your diff ratio off it.
"Momster" , good in that it will accelerate faster than a normal 325. Bad in that in will rev high at speed on the motorway (the same as your 320 does now).
I wouldn't have any worries over the 320 gearbox, as long as it is in decent condition, and the diff can be changed at any time. 325 and 320 diff cases are a different size, but are interchangeable, although you may have to adjust the length of the prop slightly at it's sliding joint in the middle.
