e30 Cabby Speakers and Amp Help

Hi guys got a quick question I'm got a 4channel amp sitting around which has 100rms x 4 @ 2ohm. I'm thinking of putting this into my e30 cabby.

The backs are running 100rms speakers and the front running around 80rms. Would it be ideal to run them of my amp rather then my headunit which is 45rms x 4.

In other words besides the huge power gain from the amp would the sound be distored or anything from the amp, would I be able to limit the power balance between the rears and the front. Or would that only work if they are wired directly from headunit.

Sorry for being a novice. but decided its time to upgrade the old sound.

use the amp, it will have a gain for front and rear, you will probably find you will not need to turn the amp up fully

in my opinion it would be a waste of time using the amp the head unit at 45rms x 4 is more than capable of blowing up the headphone sized speakers in a cab

opz yeh just noticed my headunit has a amp out for rear and front. now just a matter of opnion on wether to use it or not.

Absolute crap.

The amp is far bigger than the tiny amp crammed into the head unit - the sound will be much better.
I wouldn't worry about blowing the front speakers - it may be worth upgrading your front speakers to components. I have just done all this in my cab and the sound is great.

head units are supplied with the cheapest amp the manufacturer can get away with. they are ok a low volumes but once the power demand is high they begin to distort the signal, this distorted signal is simply reproduced by the speakers and hence it sounds distorted.

A good quality multi stage class A amp will ALWAYS sound better then a cheap class A amp when driving the same speakers - put the amp in and you will not be dissappointed, if you are then the speakers are no good or the amp you have is a really cheap one.(do not pay attention to the speaker power rating too much they claim their power as PMPO (peak music power output) which means it will accept 100W at very high frequencies but low frequencies are different - i have heard an electrostatic speaker almost 7 feet tall it sounded amazing and it was rated at 24W driven by a true 24W amplifier.

dont forget to keep the amp power supply seperate from the signal leads if possible, a good place to locate the amp if its big is on the boot, you will also find a handy power supply behind the rear seat (used to power the rear heater blower) let me know if you want some more info on this

I have not seen any headunit put out 45wrms, I don't think it's possible.

MRLEE I can't see this guys amp being an A class, or like AB, but what you say is true. I should think that the headunit will be a B class.

e30owner your amp is 100wrmsx4@2ohm and you speakers are 4ohm, so your amp will give 50wrmsx4. Use the amp it will sound better.

ok the chances are your head unit is 45w.4 right?
that will mean it will produce anything from 12 - 16wrmsx4.

Like chu346 advised - install the amp.

If you are running dead bone stock speakers the chances are they will not last to long, especially if it's not configured correctly. However if you or previous owner has replaced the speakers they will sound far better once AMPED.

Also like ch346 said - if its rated 100wrmsx4 @ 2Ohm, then get either some infinity kappa c60.2 or similar. Then you will be running 2ohm, otherwise it's only 50wrmsx4.

Deffo use the amp - it'll sound much better!!!!!!

Regardless of running at 4 ohm and being only 50wrms (or maybe even 25 per ch?) - it'll still sound better than the h/u internal amp!!

As has been said, no h/u puts out their 'claimed' power rating!!!!! And the power they do generally put out is not very good/clean!!
