What should I check?

Mine sits 1/4 mark and I have no problem with that. Why do you say its acting strange? What did it do before?

Some will sit at 1/4, some will sit at 1/2, it seems to vary from car to car. Its when they change the from the norm (for that car) that means something could be up - as march said, what did it do before?

BMW OE thermostats have a habit of cracking through on one side of the bridge piece. For a sudden change in needle position, I'd first check the nut on the back of the cluster, and then check if the stat has broken.

Not too expensive so not too much of a problem though I wouldn't normally recomend swapping in and out parts like that. You could remove and inspect it first.

How do you get to the nut without taking the dash out!? A few weekends ago I took off all the casings that sit below the steering wheel and laying upside down in the footwell I could see the brass nut but could not for the life of me get a spanner onto the nut to tighten it!!!! Im sure the answer is a simple one but be b*ggered if I know what it is!!!

EDIT because I'm an idiot.

You have to pull the instrament cluster out steve, takes 5 mins, once you have the dash cowling off there are a few screw in the top that need undoing, theres a thread with a step by step guide and pictures in the tech help forum I think.

I got mine out without taking the dash out :?

3 nuts on the panel over the top of the steering column. 2 screws on the trim around the cluster. 2 nuts on the trim too. Then 2 on the cluster. Then just comes out between steering wheel and dash.
