now i always thought the m3 was a 4 cylinder 16 valve motor but my bro in law has info and pictures of 1 turboed 6 cylinder did they make these ???

Yeah, E30 M3 is 4cyl 16v.
Was most likely an engine swap as Andy said, like this one..
