ecu chip swap 2.5 into 2.0 ecu urgent help needed

can any1 help me i`m putting a 325i m20 into a 320i touring year 1988 auto and need to swap the ecu or chip and sum1 on here said u can just swap the chip 4 a 325i ,now i have the original 2.0 ecu no.0261200172 and an ecu from a 325i sport no.0261200073 from year 1987 if i put the 325i chip in will it work or fry my ecu any help will be much appreciated thanx.

Don't know if being auto makes a bit of difference though. Is the new engine going in also auto?

073 and 172 are totally incompatable dude ! dont do it
you need a chip from a 173 ECU ideally
073 runs two pulse gens and the outputs are all configured differantly too.
it will run on the 172 as is but source the correct chip before you give it some beans or it WILL blow up

hi there yes it`s staying auto but the chip from the 325 i want to put in the 320 ecu is different it`s only got 2 rows of pins instead of 3 but the chip goes in should it work ok because all 325`s were motronic.

sorry to jump on your thread, but im droping in a 325i engine and taking out a 320i one also but mine is a manwell, now the ECU i have in is a
0 261 200 172
and the ECU i got with the 325i lunp is a
0 261 200 164
now will it just be a simple plug in job or will i have to try and find a diffrent ECU??
