They look sexual, I almost put an order in today too, but still deciding if I want total-seal gapless top rings for an extra £105 per set I'm not sure.

Hope mine don't smell of poo.

BTW did you get stung for import duty?

I've been put off total seal rings as you must run them in with high cylinder pressures or they seem to leak like mad.

High cyl pressures are fine if your engine's mapped, but if it's not you could cause yourself some headaches. Normal gapped rings are a little more forgiving.

The Customs for just said I paid VAT on them, leaving the import duty blank. However, the VAT was enough! Still works out very cheap for a top quality set of pistons though considering you'd pay about £180+VAT per piston over here!

Ceramic coated crowns and moly coated skirts :D

Little bit of progress today on the new inlet manifold, Dad cut the big round holes in the top plate there for me so they're done except for the oil breather, and finished machining the translators too which I'm quite chuffed about. Just gotta cut the remainder of the runners from the tube I've got and I'm away!

Time to break out TIGgy the TIG welder again :D Hope I don't run out of gas!

Had quite a productive day today :D

Fettled all the inlet flange ports to match the head nicely and set about welding the various parts together.

Started out with the translators:

Image

Which took most of the morning, then cut the remainder of the runners and machined the welds back to let the bolts which hold the throttles on fit neatly:

Image

And finally before I ran out of enthusiasm for the day, tacked the runners in place, aligned them using the throttle flange and then ran about an inch of weld around each runner just to stop them getting knocked out of place during the week:

Should get the manifold finished off next week with any luck. Gotta make up some injector bosses and weld them on, and think I'm going to make a set of 90degree bosses so that I can use a modified fuel rail as an idle air rail :)

Just ordered a nice light flywheel! Should be about 5.4kg and look a bit like this:

Drilled to suit a Tilton twin plate OT series clutch, all for the princely sum of £220+VAT which ain't bad!

AutoCAD......and low wage expectations  Would be a bit of a commute for you too dude!

Today's update I'm pretty chuffed with! Got the inlet manifold done except for the breather and injector/idle air bosses. Will probably weld the odd bit on here and there for the linkage and throttle stops etc.

So here it is, in all it's glory

Image

Image

Moved the autobox dipstick a little bit to let the mani in, much happier now I know it fits properly!

Image

Image

So the next thing is to get on with the other side of the charge cooler. Have fitted the new manifold to the head to help with fabbing that up:

Image

Image

And for good measure, bolted a set of the throttles on :D

Image

Image

Now do we think it'll be OK to widen the plenum as it moves away from the core so that all the inlet runners are parallel to each other?

Bit undecided on that one as yet, might be limited by space in the end I guess.

Also want to incorporate a water trap in the plenum just incase the core bursts!

or a bilge pump?!!!

that looks fantastic! will there be servo clearance issues though? looking a bit bulky over that side of the engine.

Got bags of room to the servo :D

Guess my legs will adjust to get the car off the line gently.....I hope! Looks like organic linings for the clutch are available though so that should help!

Just looking at cams now, going to go for a CATCAM 1300533 which has a 272/248 duration. I'm told it's great for use on turbocharged engines helping with an early spool, although not sure the system will need much help in that respect!

Cheers dude, much appreciated!

Got some bad news for the project today though:

The rods and clutch came through in the post so excitedly I opened the box. The clutch is great, the rods on the other hand are 142mm long!

Not a happy bunny! Hopefully he'll give me the money back but now I feel doubly bad as I was going to send my M52 rods off to March109 and now I've had to let him down! :(

We'll get there in the end though!

Hooray and thank goodness for reasonable people!

The the chap made a genuine mistake and is going to refund the monies!

Anyhoo, more spanglyness! Here's the lovely new clutch: Just gotta wait for the flywheel to arrive and then measure the thickness of the driven plates I'll be needing :D

Think I'll get the throttle linkage up and together this weekend if I can, really satisfying to get things with moving parts put together :D

All a bit tedious today.

Started off by soldering up the ends of the spindles (I just used a slitting saw to slice down the middle and then stuck a bit of brass back in at the end)

That took forever, then had to machine the ends down so they'd go in the little needle roller bearings I've got for them.

Lastly drilled the holes for the butterfly screws and machined a throttle pot drive on the master spindle :D

Glad it's all done now as I can get on with bearing holders, seals and linkages tomorrow now :D
