i want to match up the exhaust nuts as they were a mis match of bits and bobs for some reason
They need a temp rating of 650 degrees, the studs are ok
Do we think these would be ok? i just want to match it all up again for ease of maintenance. Alpina want over £5 per nut
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M8-X-12-EXHAU ... 6984929182
Turbo place recommened the new ones be the same as before 600 degrees of probably possible. Some locking ones would help and i might not need to re tighten after 2000km's
like alpina recommend as that will be a very sad job!

gaskets are toast too.
I'm sure the original nuts are some sort of steel coated in copper. And some of the ones i took off seem to be copper only with 12mm heads. Alpina states the same size M8 with 10mm head nuts are used everywhere in the area. About 30 in total 5 on turbo, 4 on turbo flange and 6 per manifold.

One thing that's worth doing is checking how tightly the manifolds fit onto the studs. The old mistake used to be using a standard type fit with cast iron manifold - it was a huge problem on the U R Quattros that would crack a manifold again and again. However, some bright spark decided to drill the holes out a tad bigger and it cured the issue, allowing the cast manifold to expand and contract. Also, get the manifold flanges refaced together to ensure they're both completely flat.
Bollocks to £5 a nut, just use whatever studs and nuts a 535d uses - they're bound to be good enough.

the studs are rated to 700 degrees and are nikel based alloy. They all ok so i was going to reuse them.
Theres space there andy the holes aren't majorly tight. I checked them with a rule and they're flat but i couls get my old man to reface them for the ultimate fit

It'll be interesting to see how much, if any, difference the rebuilt turbos make to the car as it was when you first got your hands on it..

Well i'll have to get it back on the dyno. See if it makes more than last time or above the factory figures. Which i think secretly it will as i think they're a little conservative

Alpin definitely understate their numbers. I read a magazine article comparing Alpina and Hartge E28s recently. The B7S E28 was rated to do 0-60 in about 6 secs, but when the testers actually put it down a runway it clocked something like 4.8s. In a 1987 saloon car....Simon13 wrote:Well i'll have to get it back on the dyno. See if it makes more than last time or above the factory figures. Edit: Linkage..

The B10 has lifted the standard a little though!
I thought Gi Joe sorted the plumbing at the 'Dream Factory' ?

A rebuilt turbo, or two. Courtesy of turbo developments Brentford. I picked these up about 2 weeks ago. Any how these have been rebuilt with upgraded 360 degree thrust washers. Which means as i understand it, more oil to the vital area of the turbo and much better for a cars driven hard.
The guy who rebuilt them said as before they had been rebuilt before, most likely by universal who are near southamption. Also the exhuast housings are not original so they must of been replaced at the last rebuild. He did say they were really in good contion and you could tell the car had had the oil changed regularly

They supplied all new studs, washers and gaskets. The shiney nuts are the new locking ones i got off the bay. Copper plated steel nuts rated to 1000 degrees. The man who rebuilt the turbos said you can tell they get very hot these cars!

rear one with the bits on, theres a gasket to go on the back with the 5 studs sticking out. There were none when i stripped it down! Probably a big reason why it was blowing in this area before i'd say. 2 new gaskets coming from germany

Front one built up as it came off the car. helps my mind, glad i took pictures so i could see what pipes bolt where
The clutch........bug gulp was ordered over a week ago, as i understood there was one in stock at alpina so should be here soon
I've got a load of bits coming from my local dealer gaskets, pipes etc. Hopefully i'll get a day or so free over easter to get up the unit and get some work done.

Baked beans this month?
Are you doing to dyno it again after the turbos are on? It'd be interesting to see if fresh turbos give you any more ponies as a bonus for your work.

Taking it hard.
even with a good discount. I've ordered 2 new engine mounts. GSF don't stock anymore and ECP were about 30p cheaper per bush compared to BMW!
I'm quite keen to drive it now, will be a while yet. Maybe some warmer weather for when its back on the road. I'm quite done with winter and 2 degrees now. Puts me off working on cars
Its all my money i had saved for my e30

The financial part of owning more than one car, especially the type that float your boat will never be anything but draining when things go wrong.Simon13 wrote:Taking it hard.even with a good discount. That will be mikes car. Hes just finished a total engine rebuild after 2 snapped rockers. He had his turbos rebuilt into hybrids at the same place i did. Hes upping the boost so i'm told
That makes sense as Brentford isnt really far from me.... It went past me the other way, as I was driving, then upon returning home it was parked about a minute away from my house....
Will take a closer look if its still there today and hopefully a chat with the owner....

As much as the financial pain is epic theres a lot of pics to come and a recent hive of activity!
these sort of projects are mad once you start, theres so much

Check it out all the fun to start. Before we start, if you look at the right hand side of the ramp you can see a patch repair to the floor around the post.............
Well last time this very car was on this ramp (it was working then) the bolts on this side securing the post pulled! nearly died/ lost the car etc. All ended very well, but out of guilt I repaired the floor by digging and concreting something more secure. I can report all is well now.

slipping clutch meant box off.......

prop guibo is off a lorry. And looking very mint, money saved! These bolts needed 2 large breaker bars to split

prop centre bearing was on the way! An unforeseen as you call it

How did we end up like this.
A torx bolt in the worst location didn't want to play ball on the gearbox. Not what I wanted to end up happening but its going to be for the best.

Nice engine mount. E30 M20 stylee, buy these from BMW they're about 30p more per mount that Euros!!

The mighty clutch and it is to handle this torque and be this thin! Its soooo thin, genuine and its done the business. Nearly on the rivets
Talking of which i'm off to pick the new one up 2moro....

big hole

e30 owners rejoice! A collapsed sub frame bush. I can get a screw driver in there and lift the axle on this side. It just died one day under a hard drive from Phil Crouch!

this side is ok but I've a pair on order.
That's where i'm at basically. I forgot the camera the other day but its moving along and theres a whole load of "while your there" kind of jobs you have to do along the way.
Lots more pictures and struggling to come no doubt!
