E39s - I like them. They like fuel (16-18mpg for the most part), rear tyres (every 3-8k miles), clutches (maybe 20k miles if you like your snap changes) and other sundry snacks.

If you're buying one (and despite all the doom and gloom there's no real reason not to) make sure it ha been scrupulously maintained and think about upgrading the brakes, suspension and clutch if you plan on driving it hard. Otherwise, its big fast car with commensurately big, fast arriving bills 8)

I'd still take an E34 tourer now though, if I could find one.

I too have lusted over an E39 M5, but as many of these posts suggested, they've given me cause for concern. Problem is almost all of them have been thrashed, and now BMW have moved the goal posts with regard to the warranty too it possesses problem if anything major should go wrong.

The sales are dropping too, I've seen these cars selling as low as 10k
Great buy for a once 55k motor but is it really worth the risk??......

Wouldn't touch anything without a warranty, but before doing so, check with the BMW in what the warranty covers before making a costly mistake.

How does an E34 stand up in terms of maintainance?
I have always fancied an E34, probably a 3.6 and they seem very good value at this moment in time, better still I'd take an E28 M5, but those are, quite rightly due to rarity, more expensive to buy than an E34.

Can an E34 M5 be looked after without regular trips to the stealers?
