Best way to find an air leak is to spray with wd40 .. do a bit at a time.
If it settles down then you've found it.

is there any difference between the ecu for a facelift car with the lower compression lump than what you have in there (earlier higher compression engine)

has the car misbehaved since the transplant of engine? What's the score with the timing sensor which is on the front of the later engine and on the flywheel on the earlier version isn't it?

Yes, I followed Ant's instruction on how to do it properly keeping the original 173 ecu incl swapping the CAS.

Its never idled properly since the transplant, which did question whether my mechanic hasnt done something he should have :squint:

you questioned TPS earlier - throttle position sensor.

on the bottom of the throttle body. As soon as the throttle is opened ever so slightly you should hear a click from this. Worth taking tps off and giving a clean with ignition cleaner or something similar

apologies if this has been answered already

Yes it clicks. Ive had all the t/b off and its sparkly clean. Problem was after cleaning the icv, t/b and afm it made it even worse.

Fcuk knows whats going on. A trip upto Ant is in order i thinks winkeye

SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY FCUKED NOW!

I had a spare hour to take off all the hoses around the t/b and icv. Found that a hose from the icv to the t/b wasnt 100% on properly. So sorted that out in a hope it might sort the idle problem out.

Yes its sorted the idle but now it MISSING like fcuk....sounds like a lawnmower chugging (like the timing is out)......What possible could cause that. It was fine before!!!!

Cant drive the f**ker now :x

i think you need to get another e30 side by side with yours and play spot the difference, maybe a pipe is routed the wrong way, or missing, or wrong place.

good luck

Nothing more to say on this then Stu???......seeing as you work for BMW :?

This symptom sound's like the plug is'nt on the TPS properly!

And remember......the throttle stop screw need's re-adjusting as the position it's at, it will be idling too low.

had similar idling problems with my 316i...also got worse when it was warm

i used advice off my mech to clean icv but with no luck

i took it to his garage and he put it on the computer

the computer said no problems

the next mornin i went to start my car and it wouldnt fire up.

tryed everything... i mean everything

towed it to the garage and the computer said the crank sensor had fucked.

put a new one on

car fired up but ran like a bag off shite. was missing and sounded like it was flooded all the time. undrivable
computer said it was fine when it blatantly wasnt.
garage had my car for 2weeks untill mech got adviced by someone to change the ecu

and guess what

it runs as sweet as a nut now

Thanks,

Even when the screw thing is completely undone it idles at 1700rpm, obviously some sort of problem there. Once its fixed I can adjust the screw accordingly

Idle has dropped to 1000rpm but now its not running right (will only drive at 30mph....missing like fcuk) , so not 100% satisfied the idle is sorted until ive got the misfire done.

Unfortunately too far from you, its W-mids near the welsh border. I've got a mate at the stealers so if off there tomorrow.

Will reveal all once i know. Drove it there 2 hours ago and it wouldn't do over 30mph and was chugging along holding up all the traffic :D

That sounds like when i forgot to plug my afm back in (yes yes yes, im a plank - Made Ant laugh tho!)

Anymore than 1500-1700 rpm and it tried to stall. can you not borrow an afm off of some one to test with? i have a spare one but i think its fooked.

Had a phone call off the Stealers earlier about the car.....

"We're are not sure exactly whats wrong with it, we have found that the engine terminals are corroded so would like to change this first, however it might be that this is not the fault. 2 hours labour plus £15 parts.....approx £200 - would you like me to authorise the work"

I said "Na its ok, I'll pick it up later if thats ok"

Went to pick it up and got a bill of £46.95 for the time spent looking at it. Got the keys and ITS FINE, misfire has gone???? WTF? :D

HOWEVER the idle is back to being all over the shop

Could corrosion on wiring loom plug pins cause a fcuked up idle?

JESUS.

thats steep for labour prices.

i would try doing that, u never know it could work. but do it urself

also have u tryed lubricating the throttle cable and moving parts etc...

or get someone to rev the car while ur under the bonnet to see if its sticking at all

gotta be the conector under the intake is Fubar then dude.

the temp sensor, and main power/ground feeds and returns are all routed through the one plug.

Quite common to find them U/S

either get the repair kit ( £Â£Ã‚£ ) or cut the connectors out and splice the wores with quality crimps, or better still solder them , be sure to weatherproof them though !

Keep us posted fella 8O

Also what I forgot to mention (yes there's more) Is that the idle is not just stable at any one point. It sharply jumps up and down the rev range from 1000-2200 like someone is switching a button. Its like its confused and not got a clue what its doing (bit like the driver lol).

Having said that, driving to football earlier, it was doing the above for the first mile when stopping at juctions etc but then i was stuck in traffic/slow moving for 25mins and it was idle fine at 1000rpm.....whether now its happier at max temp I dont know....what I do know is that its really pissing me off! :x

I'll try the above on the weekend Ant, thanks to everyone for their reply's on this matter...much appreciated

Started fine this morning, drove to work. Left for 3 hours and now just WILL NOT start - turns over for ever without a single attempt to fire up. Ive checked the obvious things but nope, doesn't wanna know!

Fuel is getting to the injectors fine.

Just tried it again, and not a hope of it even attempting to fire up. Looks like a walk home for me then :(
