Eh? You've posted a pic. of it pushed into the back of the cluster, labelled with the gearbox failure warning symbol. It should have two identical terminals sticking out of it, and your red/black and brown wires should be pushed onto them. The two spade connectors are usually taped together to form one two pin plug.
It may be possible to solder a wire directly onto the lamp for whichever terminal is missing, and connect that to the spade terminal without a home.
If you found the wires disconnected like that, it confirms my suspicions that you were sold the car with this known intermittent fault.

FAO Mark_i, or anyone else familiar with the EH electrics.
The only 325i I have with an EH box has the cluster removed from it, I don't have any wiring diagrams for the system, and I can't remember how it should be. There is a grey/white wire bundled with the warning light wires with a plug on it that looks like it would fit the green cluster socket. The socket on the cluster is a road speed signal, which seems relevant to an auto gearbox, so can anyone confirm if this should be connected, or, better still, point me towards the wiring diagram of the whole system.

Doesn't matter which wire is which on the lamp holder, but be careful not to short circuit them. You've posted while I was writing the post above, and, as you can see, I suspect that the grey(black?)/white wire should be connected to the green cluster socket, but I'm not sure. The male and matching female plug and socket arrangement is often used by BMW to 'tee' a wire into an existing wire. If there was a wire already in the socket on the green plug, you pull that wire out, plug in the identical plug on the black/white, then plug the wire you pulled out into the socket on the short flying black/white wire.
Brian I dont know if you recall that the speedo and rev counter wasnt working when I bought the car and when I originally removed cluster Nov last year I could remember where the wires went and that's when you told me that the green one goes to the green block for obc. But I dont know if the black one was connected

All three sockets on the end of the green plug carry the same road speed signal. It's used for the OBC and for speed controlled radio volume, but I can't remember if the EH autobox uses it as well. I'm hoping Mark_i can help again here.

apologies both.
I've been away at work this week and using the fone, the zone pages do not load properly.
A wiring diagram for the EH auto was the one option I never managed to find.
Diakom.ru has a diagram for a 1990 7-series, but the pins and colours are unlikely to be the same.
At this point, the key issue is to ensure that the EH light works so that you know if the transmission ever goes into Limp mode.
If you pull the white bulb holder out, is a bulb present ?

Morning mark. Bulb is present and sorted out missing spade connector on pleg and light is working now. Just need to take it for a drive. What I need to know is theres a pair of black/white wires coming from same loom as the wires that go to eh lamp. These have same connector on as the green wire for obc. Are these wires spare or do they need to be connected
Took the car for a drive and all is good with gearbox and kickdown and light in dash. Only thing is obc shows date and time but the other buttons only show 000. No range or consumption etc.
Also still dont know if I need to plug in those black/white wires
