Good luck, I am doing all of the very same on mine at the moment which I am hoping improves the MPG on mine as it was below average. Amazing how quickly the price adds up when you start replacing all what seems like cheap parts.

Result
Just thought I'd post up that the new gaskets have made a huge difference.
There is a still a little hesitation on very light throttle when stone cold but after 1 minute of running the idle is rock solid and there is zero stall on light throttle inputs. Much better than before the strip down as the hesitation was still there when hot.
The stink of fuel has gone as well but I'm going to wait until I can get the engine under load before pulling a plug and checking to see if the mix is still rich.
My bet was on the O rings on the pipe between the manni and sump and also the inlet not being put on correctly after the head work.
There were no wave washers behind any of the nuts holding the manni on suggesting a rush/bodge job.
All she needs is a mot and a dam good thrashing.
I will stick some pictures up on the build thread for those sad enough to want to see some new gaskets.
Happy for now.

Good to hear, mine has pretty much the same symptoms with the strong smell of fuel and a little hesitation so fingers crossed when I have the time to put mine all back together it should get similar results.

Regarding the pipe that goes from the crank case to the inlet manifold, I thought the top rubber O ring was supposed to sit inside the opening on the manifold. The new ring I've just fitted just gets sandwiched between the opening and the lip of the pipe, how does yours sit
?

Yes this should be a snug air tight fit. I used a little rubber grease to aid penetration!Cloggy Saint wrote:Regarding the pipe that goes from the crank case to the inlet manifold, I thought the top rubber O ring was supposed to sit inside the opening on the manifold. Sounds like your O ring is either two fat or you have not got it all lined up properly.
I fitted my tube using a tie wrap to hold the spring compressed at the bottom whilst I fitted the manni.
I then cut the tie wrap and slotted the top of the pipe home.
Just check the fit of the O ring before assembly.

My M20'd cabbie saw little use last summer,it covered less than 2k miles. It was running very rich at idle,to the point that when left idling it would stall and be difficult to re-start,all the classic signs of running rich.
With the weather being so crap this month,I've not even bothered taking the thing for it's MoT,it ran out mid-month.
But this week I've braved the cold and bought and fitted a new battery and addressed the other problems, tracing an intermitent main beam to a faulty earth and having a proper look at the idle this morning.
Removing the t/b,cleaning and re-setting the TPS and paying great care to re-seal all joints has given me a steady idle at both cold and hot.
I've not gone as far as to book an MoT,mind, but I have washed the winter accumilation of sawdust off the bodywork and hood!
