I always thought the m10 lump was a sadistic little ba5tard that responded to tuning? Bolt some snails to it!!!
iS would be waste of time. All that effort putting an engine is to get left with something missing a couple cylinders and a fook load of power.
As far as pics go. The easiest way to upload and post pics is via tinypic.com. Iminge shack has too many link options. Photobucket is great, if you want an account. For ease, tinypic.com is a piece of pi55. Upload pic, click and copy link for forums and crack on. Even puts the img tags on.

The M40 box will not bolt on, period . Only an M10 316 or 318i box will do.
A rotten 325i is the best idea, refurbing the running gear as you go.
M10's are tuneable but at much expense and a waste of time.

From what I've garnered, there's a few on here that have tried with the M10 to some success. As said above, it takes money and time. 2002 forums seem to be full of information about tuning these engines, although there is also a large difference in the cylinder heads and pistons which came with all the engines. The fritz bitz website has a small amount of useful information about them.318isPMK wrote:Does anyone have any info on what can be done to the m10 and costs?

I had a 316, and replaced the pierburg carb with a Weber DGV. Gained an extra 10 horsepower and about 20nm of torque, with the torque being much more even. I'm sure if I spent some time on a rolling road with some different jets I could gain maybe another 10hp out of it. It has great low down torque, but the last 2000rpm of the rev range is useless, although that might be down to the vacuum advance on my distributor. I was going to stick a Shrick cam in there to see how that went but didn't have enough money. To be honest, the carb cost me about £350, and I made some adaptor plates which cost me around £30, plus a brief rolling road run, emissions and ignition timing setup which was another £100. I didn't have anything scientific to show that adding a DGV and a shrick cam would do much good, I just felt like throwing money at something.
I like my M10, it's a nice cruising engine, but the fuel economy is crap for a 4 cylinder and a 6 cylinder would most likely be nicer. However, I feel moving to an M20b25 would be wasted money and I'd feel better about sticking an M50/2 in, although another thread is running discussing the costs of that! If you're looking for money well spent, then sticking a bigger engine in is the obvious solution.
However, I'd rather have an M10 than an M40.

Too cold to be spannering Daimlerman, naah I'm hardcore, T cutted whole car ( bl**dy hard work) , removed bad 80's coachline using a hairdryer and filler applicator, I think they'd been there since new or near new
. I can say the car is immaculate, needs no paint whatsoever, Autoglym has been liberally applied and it looks like a showcar, even though i've not done any real work yet ( just wanted it protected whilst in garage ) . I'll be doing photos one night this week but even the wheelarch return lips are mint.

Fair comment but I must say with the m10 and slushbox I don't think I'd ever drive it and here lies the problem, a car like the E30 drives so well with a decent engine that there's little point in an underpowered auto. The m10 with a manual would still be no ball of fire but could still be amusing but with the auto it's just too pedestrian at least for me. I'm going to take some time deciding but unless a mad fool comes up with an offer I can't refuse which is unlikely to say the least she's going to get modified. It's like Dan found with his black cromie, you can modify a lesser condition car but unless you spend thousands on panel work and paint it will always be a lesser car. In the meantime If anyone wants an 80k mile m10 engine with webber conversion / autobox.you know who to call LOL.jimbom30cab wrote:that's what i would do, leave the M10 in it and have something original, unique and interesting, you will get respect !!!

I'd guess you'r using twin 40's or the like. Mines just a single webber conversion with a manual choke to eliminate the pierburg which is awful.318isPMK wrote:Ian how is yours at low revs do you found it struggles with the carbs

These hateful devices are the O/E carberetter, seem to remember that they are a twin choke downdraught affair with an auto choke that never worked properly.318isPMK wrote:......... pieburg?

Pics at last guys, sorry for poor quality but car's in garage, light was poor, there was an earthquake, terrible flood, my tux didn't come back from the cleaners etc etc. The little marks all over it are actually reflections, and i'm ashamed to say bits of T cut missed while wiping off. I'll post some more as i start stripping.

The radiator looks a bit grotty and like it is leaking onto the undertray?

I must admit though I would leave that standard looking and get big power under the bonnet

Think that's the overflow hose which "vents" down there on the M10.FinalD wrote:The radiator looks a bit grotty and like it is leaking onto the undertray?

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Fair enough. I know nothing abouthhte M10, it just looks like the rad has a the grotty old coolant stain on it and there appears to be some of the same stuff on the undertray.Nick45 wrote:Think that's the overflow hose which "vents" down there on the M10.

Bought a 325i Touring that I knew the history of for not a lot and pillaged that for all the running gear/suspension/brakes etc.
Unfortunately a 2dr isnt an option for me so it was passed on to another zoner.....reluctantly I should add!

Eko, Gutted you had to sell the two door, though i must admit I have every reason to have moordoors ( two daughters ) but i still stubbornly stick to the two door cars. I'm thinking of exactly what you did ie a 4dr / touring donor and convert to M20 2.5. It may be a while as bonus is paid in March so really want to wait until then unless a "can't walk away deal " comes along in which case i'll jump. In the meantime i'll strip out trim/ engine etc, take loads of photo's etc.
Must admit Having done a 24v cabby recently ( 2.5 vanos) I'm tempted to try the 2.8 but to do it right means a large donation to Dan which i really don't need due to my house being a building site LOL. Either way I'll get it done somehow. It's great reading your thread as it's almost spookily similar.

Or teach them the joys of opposite lock slides, power on in the local car park.318isPMK wrote:2 daughters is every reason to get a more modern car
The eldest is 16 and the first car she drove was a BBR modified Saph Cossie running Grey injectors , T4, massive suspension mods by TDM Mogtorsport inc cut chassis ETC ( aged two standing on my lap in a a car park LOL ).
Seriously my daily is an E36 328i Conv with Hardtop, and my Mrs has a two door polo 6N........Just sold the "Modern" which was an Alfa 156 JTS, I couldn't be bothered to work on it so it built up a list of jobs req that were just not worth me doing so sold it to my mate for what We buy any crap offered ( no guilt that way LOL ). Admittedly a people carrier wb easier but hey ho eeasy ain't fun.
