Are diesel engines heavier?
Greater forces inside the pots for one must be adding weight to the crank no?

I think a diesel engine would work out quite a bit heavier than it's petrol equivalent. Turbo and intercooler and other bits all add weight.

but that shear torque buzz is worth it no???

I suppose for the 2k RPM yes it is
But then petrol turbo is even more fun!

I still remember what it was like chucking the nose of an E30 into a bend with an M40 stuck under the bonnet, then remembering what happened the first time I tried the same roundabout with new shocks, springs, bushes etc but with an M20.
All I'll say is the front went wide and luck more than skill got me round.

There has to be a point when the extra power from a heavier engine is negligible in real world terms and not just on the track.

Yep, I can't think of any way in which converting to diesel makes more sense than converting to LPG. It's a cheaper conversion, it's cheaper to run, you keep your original engine and you don't have to run an engine that sounds like a tractor and makes power over a 500 rpm rev range.

exactly, think that 'kos' has the dummy out, and i never started this thread it was just i thaught a good experimental idea..

you said "not a bad idea" to butcher an e36 325tds and go shot down by several people

a 330d m57 is a different, more modern powerful engine all together and to get it in will cost near 5k

as for x5's ...... i like them but they are w4nkers cars. i'd prefer an X6 , they are the choice of cun7s

A friend of mine had a 91 E36 as a work run around - it was a directors car when new and the company kept it. He was driving it in 2002 and kept commenting on how interior trim bits kept falling whenever he shut the door and how my 91 E30 felt much nicer and well built. The couple I bought the E30 from part ex'd it for a 92 E36, but only kept it for 2 weeks before getting the E30 back because they weren't happy with the build quality of the E36.

IMO BMW made their reputation with the E30, then sat back and built the E36 as cheaply as possible. It sold well because of the how well built the E30 is and the customers knew it.
I believe the post 91/92 E36s were better built and got better.

And yes, the E36 out handles the E30 all day long. I much prefer the 36 for racing, and I only race in a circle!

this is my point, i have both on the drive now and the e30 is far better built, i have yet to see an e36 that one or both door cards arnt coming off, the e46 however is good again and all other bmw models just e36 interiors really that im moaning about,
oh and a comment like e30s rule is kind of topical on an e30 forum? just because a car is newer doent make it better, the e36 also lacks charm and carisma otherwise people would be saving them, alot of them are the same age and older than some e30s my e36 is only there because despite been a high spec late 99 msport car i cant give it away, it will be getting broke and sold for parts soon as its basically worth more, i have nothing against e36s and also have one of them where as you just generalise about all x5 drivers and comment on a car you have probly never driven/owned if you drove one you would realise they handle and go as well as any 5 series but have more space and comfort

I honestly don't see this alledged poor build quality in the e36, OK the door cards are a well known issue but what car doesn't have issues, the e30 certainly does.

Boils down to whether or not you like the car or not. I don't like x5's but could care less who does.

From my experience, it was the early ones that suffered. I remember my mate saying about the under dash trim falling down, much like the E30 one does and the glovebox opening itself over bumps.
I would hope BMW would sort any issues in the first years production and things would get better as the years go on.
