In a way i wish id kept that LSD, seems to lock up better than the one i have now.
sometime next year it will be sent off to Gareth for a freshen up plus i have a 3.38 crown & pinion to drop in.
Yes mines running fine now apart from an annoying blow in the exhaust.

Nice, hopefully that might help with your traction issues with the lower diff ratio!
Got the new CPS and blue temp sensor fitted now, not checked clearance of the CPS to trigger wheel yet though as it was getting too dark! And yes, feeding the CPS wire upto the socket isn't the most enjoyable job I've done on the car!
How do you adjust the clearance, as it is just the allen key headed bolt that you do up isn't it? Do you have to shim it, or can you adjust the distance on the part that bolts to the block?

Yes undo the allen bolt (5mm i think) then it will slide up and down on the mount.

CPS, blue temp sensor and spare coil now fitted......
And it runs again!
It fired up straight away, idle still isn't right though. It holds at roughly 1200 rpm for a second or 2, then drops down to about 600 ish and then picks upto 1200 again for a second, and then drops, and so on. Should I still be checking for more air leaks (have replaced a few hoses with new ones already) or would this be an issue with the ICV? I have cleaned the ICV out a month or so ago and is nice and clean inside.

Yep thought as much! Time to get spraying hoses with carb cleaner to find out where the leak is! I've already replaced all the hoses that looked split and that made it run better, but obviously still not right

Car needs a good drive for the ecu to sort itself out. If its just fired up and sat there then I wouldn't panic too much about the idle

Thanks, glad it's going too! Yes the car has only been started and run for short periods of time, not driven with the new engine in. I'll have another check for air leaks and then take it for a drive, can't wait!

Ecu needs about 15 mins on idle, then go for a drive, that's what I was told when I put my chip in the old M20

It should still idle pretty steady even if the ECU has been stood for ages.
If its idling that bad introduce an air leak and see what happens, ie take the filler cap off.
What does it do if you unplug the ICV? Does the ICV 'buzz with the ignition on? (ill repost what the resistance should be between the three terminals.)
Is the TPS set correctly and butterfly shut tight?
Glad to hear its fired up btw.

Between the two outer terminals it should be 40 ohms, from outer to centre terminal you should get 20 ohms.leeparkes wrote:(ill repost what the resistance should be between the three terminals.)
Does it smell like its running rich?

Thanks for all the info Lee
ICV buzzes when igntion is turned on and it doesn't smell like its running rich, no smoke or anything from the exhaust and the TPS seems to be set up properly. Should get a chance to test the ICV resistance values tomorrow evening

Had an hour doing a few things on the car tonight, found the small vacuum hose from the FPR to the inlet manifold is badly perished where it goes under the manifold, hoping this is the cause of my air leak! BMW-fans lists the hose as 3,5X1,8, guessing the 3.5 is the internal diameter of the hose?
Also trying to tidy the ECU wiring where is passes around the top of the clutch pedal. How have other people covered the wiring to stop it rubbing on the top of the pedal when it is pressed down? I was thinking some of that corrougated plastic conduit type stuff like plumbers use around copper pipes, not sure if this would be too bulky though. Insulation tape or loom wrap would wear through in no time I reckon.
Also I've ordered a set of 280mm front brakes with 4 pot calipers from Keri (WMS)
Cost more than I paid for the car but I'm sure they will be worth every penny with the heavy old lump under the bonnet!

It is tight but you can lengthen the loom a bit by unraveling (sp) the tape around it but you only gain about 2". First time round i used part of the big gromit on the end of the E34 loom where it goes into the ECU cubby hole, cut the small corrougated piece (about 4" long) and use that.Bristol_Jer wrote:Also trying to tidy the ECU wiring where is passes around the top of the clutch pedal. You can also move it up (or down) a bit so when you press the pedal it wont harm it.

I've got all the tape off and the grommet has been cut off, I can fit the ECU fine in the standard position but was a bit worried about the clutch pedal rubbing through the wires.
Ordered some of this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5M-3mm-ID-4-3 ... 2a150fcd90
Got the vacuum hose ordered too, if it runs ok I will be booking MOT for middle of this month. How many times have I said that over the last couple of months lol?!

My ECU is facing backwards to my M20 one, and none of the wiring if anywhere near the pedals

Maybe it's another curse of the later wiring loom as my ECU is the opposite way too!

Just bolt it up with the plug facing towards the front of the car, it makes no difference anyway.

Yeah thats what I've done, but the wiring rubs on the top of the clutch pedal when it is moved as it is tight against it. The loom stuff i've ordered should sort it I reckon

No grommet in there at the moment, but the wires go through the same hole. Im sure I'll have it sorted with that loom wrap stuff though
The new vacuum hose should be delivered Tuesday, that will be all vacuum hoses and intake rubber boots replaced. So close to finishing it now!

Idle is still all over the place after changing the last remaining vacuum hose. Think I'm going to change the inlet manifold gaskets, and if that doesn't work I'm going to admit defeat and get it towed to my Dad's mates garage for them to sort

Before you start pulling the inlet mani off (which is a royal pita to do) spray carb cleaner or get a butane burner around the joints to see if its leaking, blank off the brake servo pipe too to rule that out.
Without going through your whole thread what parts are left to test?

Yea I'll do the carb cleaner test first
So far on the inlet side of things I have changed the AFM-inlet manifold hose, all small vacuum hoses, servo hoses, ICV hose, breather hose, basically every hose lol!
