got the cams delivered today from quarry motors,
so we can carry on rebuilding the motor tomorrow
on the weekend we finished modifying the bracket in side the cabin that holds/supports the master cylinder and relocated the heater pipes.
tonight we made a bracket that holds the power steering reservoir and asc valve

Top project - I love it. Hey Dips, there's a space in Total BMW for this when it's done Dude, we'll talk at the Ace next time I'm down.
Whilst the manifolds and cam covers are off, I can feel some satin black coming on, Alpina styleee. That'd look mint.
What are u going to do for a diff? Would the stock 325i big casing unit take the strain? I reckon one good donut would break it. After all, 5 litre V12 has got over twice the torque (332lb.ft against 160lb.ft) of the 2.5. The best option might be a 3.07 LSD from an E28 M535i (Pacerpete's got one). It bolts straight into an E30 rear subframe but the rear diff mount would need some fabricating. Also, the E30 diff flanges don't fit so you'd need to use E28 output shafts and CV's on modded E30 shafts.
How long before the engine is in the car and running? A month?

little update,
picked up dips new gearbox, all 6 gears are there, like silk!
cams are back in,
inlet manifold gaskets changed
new distributors / rotor arms
new spark plugs
been slow for last two weeks, waiting for the gearbox to be fixed, now replaced, we can crack on again now.

Hi Glenn,
I think you are going to have major problems stopping the diff from ripping clean out of the rear subframe, and will more than likely encounter serious halfshaft problems with this engine/drive train.
Brakes, well there are ways to address those when the Car is running, but the Diff and half shafts will be a major headache.
On the rear diff, as there is no cage to bolt the diff to, I would seriously recommend that you weld some 'strengthing gussets' on top of the diff mounting holes in the rear sub frame, maybe some 6mm plate, and then increase the length of the diff mounting bolts by 6mm so as to keep the drive train level.
I would also use solid rear diff mounts not rubber ones.
This will help in stopping the Diff ripping clean out the sub frame.
I would also fabricate a second diff hanger for the offside, something to mirror the nearside, so that as the Torqe trys to twist the diff, it is supported on both sides.
On the half shafts, unless Dibs wants to pay for geniune DTM Half Shafts, around 750.00 each, if you can get them, Z3M Coupe rear trailing arms, half shafts, larger bearings and strengthend hubs, will fit straight in, and also fit a E30 LSD so long as you use the outer diff hubs from a E28 or E36 M3, 6 star type. This should be good for 350/375 BHP, and if you/Dibs can find a complete ZM3 Coupe rear end, then you will also upgrade the rear brakes at the same time.
There is a Guy on S14 at the moment, who has Supercharged his S14 engine, making 453 BHP, last year he sheared 8 half shafts and got feed up with being towed home.
This is a fantastic project, but increasing the volume is one thing, putting all that power to the asphalt, is another.
Hope this all helps in the grand scale of things.
Will call you soon Glenn.
Regards,
The Gorilla.

so why doesnt a 9.8 sec 1/4 E30 rip its diff and half shafts out? surely it just gets to a point where wheels spin right, its not like they are even running a locked diff and drag tyres on this touring?, seen tonnes of vids of 400+ bhp on BMW shafts and diff giving it loads, wheel spins in 4th gear at 100 mph and never broke, ticco (500bhp) ragged the bollocks off his e30 and he broke the box first and fitted a e36 box then, yeah the 8 series box probly abit stronger but I cant see him ripping whole subframe off with 300 bhp?, if this is a drag car I might see the point but not on a touring road car.

Hi
e36 twin mountdiff covers fit the diff, so that coudl also give extra support, and i have a mate who makes custom drive shafts for motorsport inc lotus and aston, should be cheaper than the DTM stuff.

Mmmmmm,
I find it quite amusing how some people read something and then edit it, to dramatise it.
WillG- Not sure if you read my post correctly or not, but would you please edit to me the part where I mentioned that 300BHP would rip off the whole rear subframe please.
WillG- in life you will find that pro-active is much more advantageous than re-active, pro-active is using your brain, re-active is using your wallet.
WillG- why do you think that BMW thought it was a good idea to put dual diff mounting ears on the E36 Diff cover but not the E30 ?
So while I am always willing to accept that everbody is entitled to his or her opinion, and disagreement will always ensue, I can not accept somebody reading what I said and then 'implying' that I said something else.
Nothing personal WillG.
e21Jason- I should have remembered that the E36 diff rear Cover has dual mounting ears as I am in the process of using a similar set up for a E30 road car project that is now nearing completion.
Up-rated shafts will come into play once the power starts to increase in significant amounts.

right, ok,
the engine and box is in for the final time, hopefully! (it's been in and out about 6 times, to make sure things were positioned correctly)
so we're now adding the ancilleries to the engine bay, and it's filling up quickly! there's not much room left on the nearside. when it's finished, it's going to look full!
now that this project is coming to an end, i think the engine bay is looking awesome!!

Have you squeezed the E32 ECU box in to the engine bay ?
It might be just be the pictures but it looks like the engine is sloping down at the back ?

to be honest i think the dif mounting will need some strengthening, but shafts and actual diff will be ok, in my M3 dips and I abused the shit out of it, burn outs, doughnuts, lunching continusly and never had a prob with any tranny components, (almost 2 years before i took it off the road) and that packs out 315 bhp and 365lb of torque

yes andy, it's leaning back a little, as the gearbox mounting is still to be bolted up,
and yes, again, we managed to get the E32 ecu box into where the battery used to be

ok,
this baby is running!
got it fired up tonight, exhaust's not finished, so couldn't let it run for long.
just a couple of bits & pieces to finish it off and it'll be back with it's rightful owner next weekend.
ps,
then i can make a start on the next project i've been asked to do........
