I am proud to introduce to you the newest mod for our e30's.

Automatic interior light delay dimming - the "g-light"

Image

http://www.digitalunderpants.com/dim/demo.mp4

(Youtube version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjPSJVDmgaU)

Image

It works just like newer BMW's, when you close your driver's door, it keeps the the lights on, and then slowly fades out over a period of about 30-45 seconds(these units are no longer adjustable)

It has an added feature that when you turn the key, it dims down the light quicker, so that you can start driving. Anyone that had driven a newer BMW knows this feature. It adds a really cool lighting effect, and is very useful at times. Like when you need to read a map real quick.

- Quality construction
- PWM (pulse width modulation) design uses very little current, less then the stock relay
- Custom printed circuit board.
- Replaces stock relay
- No cutting, no splicing
- Installation only requires a Phillips head screw driver and a 8mm socket.
- Free USPS priority shipping(USA only)
- Bench tested to over 50,000 cycles with out failure, about 6+ years of normal use

EDIT: Note that the delay featured is only triggered by the drivers side door - opening the passenger side door simply switches the light on and off, handy if you're like me, and always getting something out of the car. All the original functions of the interior lights remain. You can still manually switch them to the "always on" or "always off" position as well.

Here is a look "under the hood"

Final price shipped with no insurance/tracking: £Â£ 19.22 GBP

Final price shipped fully insured: £Â£ 28.95 GBP

I'm offer the shipping with out tracking and insurance as an option, but if it got lost in the mail, you would be out of luck - I won't be able to replace it. It would be too easy for someone just to say that they didn't receive it.

- remove the drivers side bottem dash cover to gain access to the hood relase cable bolts (8mm) and remove the bolts.
- Remove the speaker panel and the speaker.
- Remove the two screws that is just below the speaker opening and reach into the speaker cavity and pull the bracket out
- Remove relay, and plug in the new dimmer mod.
- button it back up and you are done.

QUESTION: How do I check to see if I have the stock relay?
ANSWER: Don't worry, you don't have to take anything apart.
Simply open your drive's door, kneel down, and slowly and
gently push in the black pin in your door jam (it's on the car not the
door), you should see your interior light go out when you do. Now do
it a few more times slowly, and listen for a clicking sound
coming from about where the speaker is. If you hear a click, you
have a relay and are good to go.

QUESTION: "Does it require no extra modification for it to dim
down quick when you turn the key or do we have to tap into the
ignition switch?"
ANSWER: No extra
work, it is plug and play. remove the stock relay, and replace with
this. ZERO cutting, ZERO splicing...

QUESTION: Where exactly is the relay that it replaces?
ANSWER: The stock relay is located below the speaker on the
driver side foot well. Basically, you remove the kick panel, and then
pull the speaker out, undo two screws holding the relay bracket
and pull the bracket out from under the speaker cavity, replace
the relay, and you are done.

QUESTION: What happens if you have non-stock speakers with
bigger magnets, could there be a clearance issue?
ANSWER: Not
a prolbem - The relay is *below* the speakers, not behind it.

QUESTION: I have led's in my interior light sockets. Would the
dimming function work with these lights?
ANSWER: I have not tested LED's yet

QUESTION: What happens if I don't have the stock relay, will
this still work?
ANSWER: Yes, you will need to splice two wires to make it work, when you paypal me request the non-stock relay version.

For two units - at $39.50 x 2 + $20 shipping w/ insurance = $99 USD or £Â£48.18 GBP

Since you are ordering 2, I'll give you a 10% discount, your price for two units shipped to your door is £Â£43.37 GBP

You can paypal me at george.graves@gmail.com - either in GBP or USD (43.37 GBP = 89.1247 USD)

As long as the amount I recieve is about $90 USD I'm fine with that.

Here is the currency calculator I used to convert - http://www.xe.com/ucc/

If there are several people who want these, we could get them sent to my work as one package (im guessing this would save quite a bit on postage) and I could forward them on from my work to people, free of charge.

Just thinking of a way to save people a few extra quid!

Hi George,Thanks for your quote,I am certainly interested at that price. Now in your article you mention a relay that clicks when the door switch is operated. On both my E30's when I operate the pin switch in the R/H door(drivers) I can hear a relay clicking somewhere in the L/H footwell. You mention that this dimming only works from the drivers door.As my drivers doors are on the R/H side, will it still work properly? You mention fitting in the L/H speaker panel area,by the central locking relay,on my cars the central locking relay is mounted on the drivers(R/H) side.I am pretty fair with spanners but not to confident with the electrical issues!!

I am assuming that the installation instructions above are written for Left Hand drive E30s. Will it work on the drivers side door on Right Hand drive?

Really? Since it would be a preaty long boat ride to come look at a right hand drive e30 - I'll have to get some help from you all.

I found this -

Image

Here: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/smi ... itting.htm

Now, as I'm looking at that picture - that IS the Right hand/drivers side.

Regardless - don't worry about the electrical - If you have the relay installed from the factory (where ever it is located) you just replace it. If you are missing the relay, you will need to connect the two wires as described on the page above or here: http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... rior+light

Yip, that is the right hand/drivers door. This is where my central locking relay is.Does your unit just plug in?

Is there a discount for a group buy?

YES, it just plugs right in - you would only need to splice two wires if you car was missing a relay from the factory. There are instruction above how to do that. See the link - 95% of cars have them from the factory BTW. You can test for it -

QUESTION: How do I check to see if I have the stock relay?
ANSWER: Don't worry, you don't have to take anything apart.
Simply open your door, kneel down, and slowly and
gently push in the black pin in your door jam (it's on the car not the

it a few more times slowly, and listen for a clicking sound
coming from about where the speaker is. If you hear a click, you
have a relay and are good to go.

That is the discount price - kinda. I find formal "group buys" to really be annoying, you have to wait weeks while the list fills up, only to save a few bucks. If you order 2, I'll give you a 10% discount - so go find a friend, just please don't plan out an entire "hey, who want to go in on two of these" kinda of posts here - please keep it to friends/locals.

The central locking locking loom with the 'relay' mounting plate is reversed in RH drive cars compared to LH drive cars.
If you want to get it to work on both front doors, then you have to run a single wire from one side of the car to the other.
George - very, very few E30s have a delay unit fitted from the factory, so very few have the door handle switch.

Oh - well I see - most cars in the state have them, but the relay or the door switch fail after a few years.

My unit does not need or use the door handle switch to trigger the lights, only the door pin switch.

One more thing, I fitted a delay relay but it does not work. Your unit replaces this right and just plugs right into the loom for it?

You have to disconnect a wire from one connector and connect it to another. Also, if you don't have the door handle switch, the wire from that will need to be spliced to that from the door pin.

Disconnect the existing wire from the passenger pin switch, and run a new wire from here to the wire from the driver's door pin switch.

Got the funds - thanks, should ship out today or tomorrow.

I keep meaning to buy some ebay LED bulbs to test with, it *should* work with LED as my unit uses pulse width modulation. I try to pick some up for testing.

I tested it up to about 45 watts of lighting with out a problem. WAY more light than you would ever want in your car.

IF you already have a factory fitted delay unit in your E30, then this unit is P&P.
If you don't have a delay already, then you will have a socket to plug it into near the locking ECU underneath the driver's footwell speaker.
To use George's unit, you have to do exactly the same as you would do to fit an OE BMW unit: Pull the wire off the driver's door pin switch, and plug it into a spare socket nearby, find a spare wire taped to the loom, untie it, and plug it onto the door pin switch.
The factory fitted unit also has a switch which is operated by the outside driver's door handle. Since you almost certainly won't be fitting this, the pin on the delay unit that connects to it has to be connected to pin from the door pin switch instead (i.e. link two connections on the delay unit together).
The factory unit only operates from the driver's door. If you want it to operate from the passenger door as well, then you have to remove the connector from the passenger door pin switch, connect a new wire to it, run the wire across the car, and connect it to the wire from the driver's door pin switch.

People im pretty sure you can get kits and do this yourself with a little bit of soldering! Save yourself the hassle. Have a look at the link below...

They dont dim. Besides, if you can build them, why not build the one on mp3car.com

One of two things fail with the stock relay. Either the door handle switch, or the relay it self.

My unit does not use the door handle switch, so even if your is faulty it would work regardless.
