E36/Z3 rack conversion bits group buy? Ireland
Moderator: martauto
More or less the same since the spacers don't cost me much to make, It's the hoses and fittings and making them up is whats expensive and time consuming.
Suppose £5s less off the total price for just the hoses
The pressure hoses are rated to 300bar and the return is 30

I´m waiting for my stuff..
Sorry lads, haven't been on here in abit.
Have exams until the end of May so not being able to get much done.
Re: Gunni, has your kit arrived yet?
Re: Mikekean. Can't get into the Machine shop at all but hopefully manage something tomoro. Just to confirm, it's the E30/E36 joint you want isn't it, or is it an E30/E30 joint?

Yep. still making them. Have a few hoses and spacers made up at the moment but the I've been given the wrong fittings to screw into the pump so must go get the right ones when I get a chance
Kinda busy this week working at home at other stuff on the farm..... in the wet
The solid coupling will still work as you just fit the rack on the front (Non-PAS) holes

OK, no huge hurry as I've still to find a rack - they're gettting a bit thin on the groundDave_M3 wrote:Yep. still making them. Have a few hoses and spacers made up at the moment but the I've been given the wrong fittings to screw into the pump so must go get the right ones when I get a chance

Let me know when you have a set and I'll pony up.
With regard to fitting a PAS rack in the non-PAS position, does this introduce bump-steer or any other undesirable behaviours?
No bother, I'll give you a shout when I get them sorted
Ya, I got a quite abit of bump-steer at first by having the spacers above the rack to clear the M42 sump...
But, the actuall culprit was the car not being tracked properly, brought it in to another place and the wheels were out a mile (probably due to the first place going by the rear wheels too which they hadn't realised didn't have spacers to keep them in line with the front
)
Once I had it tracked properly then, it was minty again
until my rubber guibo started to wear
So, I'll need to put in a solid one too it seems, lol

Hi,
I'd like the full kit for my m42 engined e30 touring. How much is it please and how do I pay? I take it fitment is identical for whatever rack I get e36 or z3? Also How soon can it arrive, as it'd be good If I could fit it before a trip to the ring aug 13th.
Cheers Ali

Mine is fitted, thanks Dave.

I trial fitted to find the angle the banjos needed to be, then took hoses off and did the hose fittings up tight before fitting them again.

This meant that I could run the hoses, more or less along their original path. This pic is a little decieving but they are above the height of the bottom of the sump, so shouldn't get bashed by any road crud.

Just missed halfrauds closing tonight, but tomorrow I will be getting some fluid and testing. Wheels look pretty damn straight too, but I've booked in to get the tracking done.
How many turns lock to lock is the e36 rack compared to E30?
EDIT
Just found the answer:
Normal E30 is 4 turns and:
"Normal E36 rack is 3.4 turns.
M3 Evo rack is the same as a normal E36 rack with limited travel, which leads to 3.2 turns.
3.0L M3 rack is progressive and desperately slow in the middle. (3 turns, same amount of travel as Evo rack.)
Z3M/breadvan rack is the same as the Evo rack.
Non-M Z3 rack is the one to have. 2.75 turns for the same travel as the Evo/Z3M rack (3.2 turns), easily the fastest rack"

That last picture sure does look deceiving! I ran my hoses around the front, under the radiator.

It's a terrific mod.

Good stuff!
Good to see they are all working out and thanks for putting up a few pics too. I have some but aren't great so must do a better write up with the next one I'm fitting.
Routing the pipes around the back is handy alright, Return pipe should be nicely cooled too
but just wondering in pic have you the washers at both sides of the banjos since it looks like you put the both of them on the inside between the banjo and the rack...

No not yet Quazer, seems the only ways of doing it after shifting the rack to the side or doing some sort of fabrication work with the subframe in order to get the rack at a different angle to enable the column to go down at a different angle.
I haven't got access to a 325 with a 6 branch either so its even more difficult, lol

Well I haven't managed to source a rack yet but I'm removing the suspension to send it back to Leda for a refurb this weekend. I'd like to get it done whilst I have the car on the stands etc.
Dunno if have no suspension will make the job any easier?

Ah right, I wouldn't be able to get a set made up this weekend unfortunately so would be next weekend before I get anything sorted and it takes about 3 days or so to post then
Having the suspension off wouldn't make it a huge amount easier to be honest. It's only the track rod arm ball-joints you'll be unbolting.
Besides that once you have a few high axles stands to work away underneath the engine it's handy enough to do.
What engine is it actually?

Should be able to get an E36 rack from most BMW breakers for around £50 or so

Dave M3.
I don't need the kit as quickly as expected. I didn't do any work at the weekend due to the weather.
My mates double garage is going up on the 8th of next month so am going to wait until then. How much notice would you like to get my kit done?

Ah that's fine. I'll make it as soon as I can really and then get it ready to send off to you when your ready.
I should be able to sort it this weekend, going to Top Gera live saturday in Dublin so I'll see what time I get back Sunday evening and should be able to get abit of time in the shed since I'm pretty sure I have all the bits to make up one set at home already

Unfortunetly we can't get it to fit M20s with the 6 branch yet... but one of the guys I know that has an Alpina engine in is fitting a Z3 rack at the moment so hopefully he'll be able to come up with something.
Everything to make the E36/E46 or Z3 rack is 120 euro all in excluding postage, postage up to Donegal would be around 15-20 quid or so
