I see this thread is a yr or so old.....can/will they still do the modification??? I would stay with a manual rack if it was 2.5.

Asked today Quaife about produce the rack so they told they cannot done it.

"We can confirm that a sample rack was provided to us some months ago for quotation, but unfortunately after
inspecting the rack Is was concluded that we were unable to re-produce it."
I was going to ask a local gear manufacturer if they could do this but there seems to be a total loss of interest.

I'm definately interested! 4 turns lock to lock is a joke

Surely we can get 10 people out of the 40 thousand members who think the same?!

To arrange them again - no problem.

Because of the bit you put in brackets

I want to make sure people are still interested before I spend my time/money messing with the old rack :D

Been really really busy just lately and not had time for anything :( Maybe over the next couple of weeks I can finish taking it apart and get it to the machine shop 8)

But you have to find 10 people who are willing to have what will be (and there is no point trying to skirt the issue) really heavy steering.

Dan, put me down as a maybe dependant on price, lock to lock and if it will have full lock.

If it goes ahead I have an almost new 1.9 z3 rack with fitting kit I could sell.

I am semi interested, could some one remind me and others who may be interested in the price, spec i.e. how many turns lock to lock? Oh and do you have to send your existing one away? and if so so, before or after you receive the new one. Thanks :D

The price is yet to be told, could be anything, if it goes through you will be buying a new rack and pinion to fit into your existing casing.

What is the preferred ratio for these? Ive seen 2.2 mentioned quite a bit but that will be very heavy IMO, if I was going to be steering it I wouldnt want anything shorter than 2.5 turns

2.5 turns is probably more realistic for a mixture of driving imo (with full lock)

2.5 with full lock would be what I am after.

Why can't we do this with PAS? Or is that a dumb question? :)

Had a chat with the machinist the other day, said he'd be happy to work out the ratios, showed me the rack cutting machine and there is no reason why it cant be done 8)

this sounds quite cool to me, even though i do currently have the e46 rack. How heavy is an E30 to drive with a manual rack day to day? Ive never actually driven one!

Hands up I buggered up on this :o:  Weldone Dan for rising the pheonix from the ashes, loking forward to seeing what you produce :)

Would the racks you're talking to your machine shop about be of the round or triangular variaty? Does any one know if they're interchangable?

The reason we couldn't use the triangular rack before was because Quaife are not able to manufacture triangular racks, so if you machine shop can, then it will be much easier to get done.

Ok I will be taking a rack over to the machinists next week, can somebody give me an exact amount of turns for this rack when its fitted up, mine is now stripped down and with the track rods and damper removed its giving about 5.5 turns

I dropped the gear off at the machinists last week but the gaffer wasnt there, he hasnt phoned me either, I know he is mad busy with orders so I doubt I will hear from him until I get back over that way and drop in.
