hey joe
take a look at this link - http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3237 its an american forum but a good run through
I'm building a turbo e30 and choose a td04, its was one of the first things i bought and in some ways shaped my build, the biggest (only? )advantage of a td04 is there are lots of sizes available for the subaru boys
i wouldn't go td04 again, as you have to run water as well as oil feeds which is extra hassle and if you want the most efficient system you have to blank the internal waste gate
you should firstly look for a manifold and see what flanges are available and go from there - for a novice build id say your mainly limited buy funds once you have a rough idea of the setup

the holset turbos seem popular for bigger power - have a search in this section (holset) and see what come up
