I have a neighbours 116i which has had a new timing chain done by a local "garage" now i have it in my hands, it has no compression and I suspect it is the inlet cam adjuster as after it's all timed up you can turn it by hand and the inlet cam always slips but it's not the chain jumping

Any help would be great as I wouldn't want to look like a plum telling him it's this and after changing it be back to square one!!!

Thanks rob

Tell us more history.

Did it run after the chain was changed?

I have spoken to the garage that did the chain and they said after replacing the chain and tensioner it had no compression so told the owner it could be bent valves, the car was left as that, my neighbour then purchased the car off the owner and was told it had no compression, after speaking to said neighbour (before he had the car) I said to him possible chain issue,

After another phone call to said garage they have told me that they told the original owner it was the inlet cam adjuster, this was never mentioned to me by neighbour so wasn't my first port of call but if I had been told this it would have been obvious

Both inlet and exhaust pullys changed, timing spot on and cams no longer slip, but now it will not start, sounds like it wants to

Have you checked the compressions? Seen these bend valves and crack the inlet cam caps.
