The ignition in my 318is coupe appears to be completly f**cked... went to turn my key the other day and it put the ignition lights on (thank god) and then there was a snapping noise and suddenly my key was just spinning. So i'm guessing its going to be a new ignition time.... i'm told this is a common e36 problem... is this true?? what does replacing the ignition entail? i'm a bodywork guy so this auto electrics thing has me clueless. Any ideas on costs?

a mate of mine has just been over to look at it and somehow fixed it... i'm guessing temporarily... he said it looked like it had hopped out and then thought the steering lock was on and so wouldn't let the lights come on or start.... he pulled the ignition plug off, pinched something in the ignition and then it all works fine now... really weird if you ask me

right it's gone again :/ piece of sh*t

this seems to be the problem

Image

this little nipple of sorts (excuse my vast array of technical names) seems to be the route of all the problem. or at least the start.

something between here, and where my key sits is buggered.

Last time i (well my mate john) gripped this with a set of pliers and wiggled it about.... at the same time he wiggled my key about in the ignition.... and VOILA they synced up with each other again and all was fine... until today when it f**ked up again and this time won't sync back up again like before :(

has anyone come across this problem before? and if so, what was the diagnosis and solution.

I'm really losing my patience with the car and had to apologise to it earlier when i kicked the rear bumper in rage :(

Also..... is there a step by step guide to removing the ignition anywhere online? i want to get it out to have a look at it and possibly get it replaced.
