So after a buyers guide feature in this months Practical Classics hooked me and wouldnt let me go I've finally bought my first Alfa Romeo 8O

Pics first - these are from the Autotrader ad I havent taken any of my own yet as its filthy from the drive back :

It is a 2.0 Twinspark Sportwagon in top of the range Veloce trim

I didnt pay anywhere near the £1999 comedy screen price - When I first saw it for sale it was on for £1200 but as it was almost 200 miles away in Norwich and the dealer had had it for a while I'd agreed the deal over the phone at £950 on the basis that I would pay cash, it would have a new MOT and he would check and confirm a long list of things which I sent him by email before I made the trip to collect it.

I paid a £200 deposit over the phone - by credit card just in case

Thankfully after looking at the ridiculous journey it would have meant by train to collect which would also have meant I was on my own and fully committed to buying whether I liked it or not my best mate agreed to drive me there for the cost of the train ticket.

7am start, fry up halfway there and 4 hours later two tired brummies rock up at the dealers forecourt.

First impressions good - we have a look round it before going to meet the dealer and it looks as good as it does in the pics. 4 matching Dunlops with plenty of tread, bodywork straight with no rust and no evidence of accident damage or previous paintwork.

Met the seller and got the keys and thats where the fun began :x

He had told me by email on Friday that everything was checked and all good apart from the a/c which works but is not very cold - I'd emailed him back and told him I could live with that as long as everything else was A1 which he said it was.

When we got there he then added that there was a problem with the wipers - they only work on manual sweep or full speed - no intermittent and no lower speed ( I was aware of this as a common fault - similar to E30's it requires the wiper contacts to be cleaned and re-greased ) - no big deal but I was annoyed as fully functional wipers were on the checklist he had confirmed was all good less than 24 hours previously
He also added that there is a warning light on the dash saying one of the rear lights is out when it isnt - again all lights on dash coming on and then going out as they should was a condition of the deal.

We then went back out to the car and found my list of things I wanted checking and he had confirmed were all good on friday clearly hadnt been checked at all :x

First thing we notice is that as soon as you turn the ignition on the radiator fan comes on, and after leaving it running for 10 minutes or so whilst we crawl all over it the temp gauge is still on the bottom
The rad looks brand new so there have obviously been some cooling system issues which the seller hadnt declared but there is some wiring bodgery with the fan relays in the engine bay plus I've since found out a resistor is actually missing from the fan housing which controls the low-speed fan.

Drivers side rear electric window goes down - and then wont go back up :(

By this time i'm p1$$ed off :x

However we drive it up the road and back and it drives lovely - the engine is the smoothest 4 cylinder I have ever experienced and sounds wonderful. It pulls well and the steering and suspension are sharp with no knocks or rattles.
Clutch and gearbox nice and light with no strange noises.

We drive back and its decision time - do I walk or do I buy ?

What p1$$ed me off the most was the seller putting me in the position where I had to renegotiate.
If he'd upheld his side of the deal and actually checked everything I'd asked him to check I would have paid him what we agreed.
It looks like he hadnt bothered on the basis that he knew I was coming a long way and that I probably wouldnt want to walk away even with the faults.

I think what he didnt bank on was 2 tired and obviously p1$$ed off brummies standing up to him.

I told him I was annoyed because he hadnt held up his part of the deal - he pleaded ignorance - said he'd asked his "mechanic" to check everything after it passed the MOT and been told it was all good - he then pleaded poverty saying he couldnt afford to drop the price.

I offered him a deal - £800 or we would walk - basing it on that I knew I could fix the wipers and rear window and £150 should be enough to fix the cooling system ( new stat & temp sensor, good used fan relays, wiring check )
He took it - although I think if I'd I'd turned up on my own using a 1 way train ticket it would have been a different story

Drive back was pretty uneventful - just long.

The temp gauge did get off the bottom once we'd been on the road a while but not even near the 1/4 mark let alone halfway where it should sit - and as soon as we stopped it dropped to nothing again ( heaters ok though )

Brakes are pretty good although I think its been stood a while as the MOT expired in June and there is some corrosion on the discs.

So its now on my drive.

Had a good look over it yesterday - first jobs this week will be to get it in for a cambelt which is long overdue and get a new stat and hopefully the fan fixed at the same time.

alfaowner.com forum is very good - all these niggles seem common and fixable without too much aggro or expense and then I can enjoy it until something else breaks :chuckle:

Heart over head definately - I will find out whether it was brave or stupid once Its in the workshop - luckily there is an Alfa specialist who is well respected on the alfaowner forum less than 2 miles from my house 8)

At the end of the day whats the most I can lose on an £800 with full MOT

With the morsels it has its worth more than that in bits anyway !

Sure there will be some drama trev  but if we all drove the same stuff all the time life would be very dull !

I'd budgeted for the cambelt change anyway when I agreed the deal and if the £150 i got off the agreed price is around enough to get the stat/fan done I'm quite happy to fix the other gripes myself, chuck some ECP filters and oil in it and drive it for a few months :D

The way I look at it I served the volvo with 2 months MOT for £675 knowing it would have cost £400 in parts alone to get through the test and thats IF they didnt find anything else - I've got this for an extra £125 over the volvo proceeds with full test - OK it needs a bit of fettling but the main stuff seems all good - body/engine/transmission/suspension - so I think its worth a punt.

My dads ha three, and all have been good cars without issue, and was always jealous of the really pointy steering compare to bmws slow racks.

Most of the niggles are probably due to being sat a while. My lancia seemed to go wrong less often the more it was used!

I'd take one over a similar age e46 any day, especially at less than half the price.

Have always fancied an Alfa but never been brave enough to get one.

The morsels on this do make it look good though the leather and teledial alloys are definite must haves for these.

Hope it works out!

The steering is amazing - pin sharp and the rack is very quick - impressive.

I think I'm done with "modern" BMW's for a while - my E46 was OK but I'm in no rush to own another - and for sub £1k daily driver money there arent any I'm interested in really - I'd much rather have this than an E36 or E46 318i touring.

Kam thanks - I'll PM you if I need anything :thumb:

jas I've always fancied one of these since they came out but not been brave enough to take the plunge before - the feature in Practical Classics this month plus the looming Volvo MOT was the shove I needed

There's bound to be a few issues lurking but to be honest for shed money if I get a year out of it I'll be happy - my benchmark is £1500 depreciation on the E46 in 8 months - if it costs me less than that happy days.

The quick steering rack has caught me out a few times......

Stick in the last 8 digits of your VIN in Chassis No. and it will bring up all the info about your car, Parts, Spec level and options added.....

Looks good for the price, Alfa interiors are always a nice place to sit. As you said yourself bmw offerings at this price are generally nothing more than scrap.

Quick update

All the belts and tensioners have now been changed along with the waterpump which I had done as a "might as well" item but turns out it needed doing anyway.

Put the wiring for the radiator fan back to standard and it all works - so why it had been bodged in the first place is beyond me.

New thermostat has cured the low running temp issue.
New bulb in the fuel gauge now means all the dash lights work
Clean of connections on the rear lights has put the warning light on the dash out
Fitted my £50 Aldi bluetooth stereo

Oil & Filter change today plus a wash and polish session.
Still need to cure the wipers and rear electric window issue but that should be a case of just stripdown, clean and re-lubricate.

Really like this car - the engine is a cracker and the seats are superb

Front wipers fixed - new motor and linkage from ebay £15. 8)
Tailgate wiper has been revived with copious quantities of WD40 a helping hand and some exersize to bring it back to life.

Drivers side rear window motor needs removing, stripping and re-lubricating to get working again - and thats pretty much it !

I will have fixed all the issues I based the £150 price reduction on for less than that so quite happy :)

The a/c is now the only thing that doesnt work but i will sort that in the spring next year

If I get chance to have a proper clean & polish session in the next few days will get some better pics

Just over a month in and so far so good.

Most issues now sorted.

Pressing for my attention are a faulty bulb-warning circuit which requires repair or replacement of the rev counter and a pair of rear ARB droplinks although I may just order a complete set and be done with it.
I also want to change the plugs but as there are 8 the cheapest I can find the correct NGK's anywhere are £65

Returning 30mpg upwards on my daily commute even when using the 3k-6k powerband

The exhaust will need changing at some point but I'm going to wait until it gets really bad - it has a few pinholes on the middle and rear silencers where the mounting brackets have been welded on - thinking of going for a stainless cat-back system from these guys :

http://www.stainlesssteelexhaustsystems ... tAodEzkAHg

About £300 for the system supplied and fitted and they're local - the engine sounds great so I'm very tempted to give it an exhaust to match :D

Hello Rob - congrats on the purchase. You can't go far wrong for what you paid. If you want to keep it for longer than its current MOT, get underneath it and give it a proper clean up and underseal, they do suffer from a good bit of rot, luckily just in the floor really, along the rear footwell drains and floor-to-sill joins. But there is chassis box section nearby and if its not caught in time it'll get in there and then its done for.

Sounds like you need a rev counter - pull it out and get the part number from the sticker on top, its 8 or 9 digits. Only 3 Phillips screws to remove, one at 12 o clock on the cowling to remove that, and then two holding the rev counter in, one at 5 o clock and one at 7 o clock. It then just pulls out and unplugs, make sure the steering wheel is adjusted all the way out and down.

I've had about 10 x 156s in the last 7 years, most engine sizes, and I work for an Alfa specialist so if you're struggling for answers and can't find them on Alfaowner.com you can always send me a PM.

I probably wouldn't bother with the AC, even when its working as it should its pretty weak, none of mine have ever been great.

If you're going to spend any money on improving it, then get yourself a set of anti-roll bars from the 156 GTA (3.2 V6), they make a good upgrade especially if you don't want it lower/stiffer. Before fitting the bars, replace the bushes on the front bar for Powerflex ones.

Only thing I can add is keep checking the oil - every week - the Twinspark likes a drink in particular the CF3 (euro 3 emissions) model which is what yours is on an 02 reg.

Underneath is very good - floor is all fine. I will be power-washing and waxoyling it in the next few weeks before the winter really starts to kick in.

I've already had one secondhand rev counter which was worse than the one thats fitted - the black/orange ones are quite hard to come by but I now believe you can just swap the circuit board over so gonna find a standard one and have a go.

I have been checking the oil regularly but its hardly used any since I flushed and changed it :D

what sort of oil consumption would i be looking at on a 2.0 TS CF2 ?
Mine (2000 2.0TS 156 Selespeed) does not seem to be drinking any oil at all......

Ive had to top mine up once since changing it a few weeks ago - done a few hundred miles. To be honest it was only just below the max - could have been like that since the change anyway.

It definately doesnt seem to be drinking it the way some people describe

Anything from nothing to a litre in a thousand miles. It depends on use too, I've had Twinsparks that use nothing from week to week just driving about, but get them on a high speed motorway run and they get through it. Its just worth watching thats all, if you have one that uses oil you soon get used to it but its the ones that don't seem to use oil that catch you out in the end, if you stop checking it.

Bulb-warning circuit finally fixed with a s/hand rev counter - turns out the original was on the way out as well as the bulb warning as the needle had been juddery since I bought it - new one proper smooth.

Another typical old-car issue has just raised its head - needs rear droplinks replacing - I might get the set and do the fronts too.

Also ECP have rear wiper motors on special at just under £70 which really could do with sorting.

Still loving it though - starts first time and now its getting a lot colder the heater is very good :D Its proper fast on these cold mornings too when you get it above 3k

Had a near miss today

Decided to change the 8  sparkplugs and managed to snap one of the smaller ones clean off in the head

After getting over that feeling like you've just been kicked square in the gonads I went inside, had a brew, went on the t'internet and the general consensus was to hammed a flatblade screwdriver into what was left of the plug in the head ( the whole plug including the electrode had come out just leaving the threaded metal outer bit in the head ) and hope you can wind it out.

Worked a treat 8) PHEW

Still cant get my head round it - ive changed a gazillion plugs over the years and never snapped one before - so this is either law of averages that sooner or later you'll bust one or its a faulty plug.

Just got to hope halfords or similar have one in stock tomorrow

On the plus side the first plug I took out was proper fooked so I'm expecting some good gains for the new plugs :D

Add to your tool kit a set of those clever spiral extractor tools.
Given that you have a hole through something like a spark plug or a sump plug, these wind in 'left handed' and will fetch most broken fasteners out.

I managed to remove a damaged sump drain bolt once with one,the clock was ticking as I was due at work within a couple of hours and decided to do a 'quick' oil/filter change first! :o:

The secondary plugs are a much smaller diameter fitting although the socket size is the same - I didnt put much pressure on it at all - will be VERY careful with the rest of them :o:

Its done - local motorfactor had one in stock this morning so its back together and running

Was definately worth doing too - the plugs that came out were fooooooked !

Now its even smoother, much more low down power, more responsive and powerful through the rev range - shame it had to cost just under £80 for all the plugs  but as they apparently are a 72k service item I suspect this will be its last set

Did you fit NGK plugs or something else? The NGKs are 5 years or 60k long-life plugs.
