A friend of mine who knows nothing about cars is going to view this tomorrow:

http://m.gumtree.com/v?adId=112316074

Does anyone know what to look for on this kind of astra, Apparantly there is receipts for all the engine work but I am not convinced.

This is the only car local for under £1000 which has tax and test and is not the usual abused boy racer shit.

His car died on Sunday and he desperatly needs a car in the next few days. He only passed his test 6 months ago even though he's 34 so insurance is a concern so please no suggesting an e30 as there are none for sale near here he just needs something cheap to run, tax and insure.

Any advice on what to look for would be appreciated.

Wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, a decent one has had zero engine work and plenty of servicing and can be got for £1000 or less. As far as disastras go they are either ok or complete shite, mostly down to previous drivers and oil change frequency.

Thanks Dan and Pete. It a royal pain in the arse, I don't have the time to take him further a field to view cars and there is next to nothing advertised on the usual sites local.

Well went to see the above car today with a view to talking my mate out of it. Surprised to say the least, the car has a full vauxhall hall service history with each interval met, all old MOT's, tax discs, every receipt ever spent on the car and one owner.

The engine developed a knock from the big end and decided as the car was worth next to nothing left of with the garage selling the car in lieu of payment as they quoted too much for him to justify on repairs.

The garage rebuilt the engine with all new parts which is fully documented with receipts and they are even giving a 1 month guarantee on the car.

The only downside was no tax and a tiny scuff on the rear bumper.

It really is in very good condition. It looks like my mate is going to make them an offer on it tomorrow. If they'll let it go for under £650 he's going to take it.

Who rebuilt the engine? Back street garage or Vauxhall? Anything vauxhall with 140k up it is well past its use by date, but I suppose if it has had a proper rebuild and you can buy it for a few hundred above scrap value then go ahead, if he knows nothing about cars he might even like it

He honestly doesn't care what he's driving as long as he can get another 10 months out of it. By then he will have graduated uni and his wages will go up substantially.

His work is part funding his degree but he had to go part time so cash is very tight. Once back to full time he'll get a company 3 series but till then he just needs something for the Uni commute.

All the work has been done by an independent garage so it's still a risk but compared to all the other scrap local at the same price it's the best of a very bad bunch.
