also, IIRC, there's room to drive a horse and cart through to your woorkshop- easily get a roller in there

I wouldn't bother with an old BMW V8. Something like a big block Chrysler (Interceptor engine) would be more like it.
Given that you can buy a tidy running Shad with an MOT for £5000, this thing isn't really worth the aggro. You can guarantee the SLS will all be buggered as well.

I was at the classic car show at Tatton last year, there was a battered green roller that was running a transit diesel engine
The owner said it worked brilliantly

There used to be a GM 6.2 V8 diesel conversion kit available including new crated ex USAF engines.
I saw the engines in Range Rovers. Lovely sound. Not exactly refined though.
