thats modern scrap, got a about 4 years left before it starts going wrong i would say.

Did you hear about that email leaking from VW saying that most modern VW's have a life span of 7 years before needing a major overhall?

I was thinking you'd got a Mk4. My mum runs one of these, bloody lovely car imo, just well built and they do drive nicely, very torquey in the lower revs.

What sort of spec's it got, aircon...? 6 disk, big screen auto changer...? automatic headlights & wipers...? etc....?

I can see the logic in this. If you want a daily, reliable, not a money pit and still looks presentable then this is the way to go.

If you want to drive a classic then stick with the e30.

But a recent golf WILL drive better than a 20 year old BMW full stop! We had a 1.8T GTI mk 4 for years and i'll tell you this for nothing. That thing was driven like we stole it, we doubled the mileage from 55k to 100k and the thing just drove so well.

I drive my e30 now and yes it's great. It f*cking should be as it's been completely rebuilt but it still feels old compared to later cars.

A lot of sad people on this forum who need to grow up and realize an e30 is not the be all and end all of motoring excellence. I don't doubt this handles better than an e30, a lot of modern cars will.

Nice motor for a daily though. Just prepare to pay VAG tax if something goes wrong.

thats the logic. i have done around 250-300 miles in the last 2 weeks and the sport was just stupid doing that amount of miles at 20mpg max. i love it, iam getting 50mpg i cant belive ive done 200 miles and it still hasnt reached half a tank yet. that would of emptied my sports tank.

its fairly well spec'd poverty for a modern car but still plenty to play with

has an awsome stereo in it, climate control/AC, auto lights, cruise control, traction control, etc.

a remap would be the next thing according to alot of places a remap should bring it to 2.0tdi standards and i drove my mates 2008 2.0gttdi and it felt pretty quick.

Good move. Looks nice and sensible. I understand why you prefer it to your E30 as this will be all nice and tight and more modern. It also its quite nice to have your fuel bills slashed in half.

If only I was that sensible. :D

Old cars seldom come out smelling of roses compared to something nice , fresh and modern when used as daily smokers, especially when the old car in question is a sad bodged up turd :(

I was not directly implying that your car was a bodged up old turd , it was more of a generalization. But now that you mention it, and having read the thread and seen the pictures, I would say I was on the money :(

my dad and a mate both had the 2.0gt petrol versions, nice cars drive well, well eqiuped thought the petrol engine was smooth but weasy and /utter crap (but you have a diesel so that dont matter)

only thing id warn you about is the electrics passenger door to be exact, common fault apparently, they basically just stop working car wont lock, window, indicator, mirros etc just wont work, the other is the stereo again just poops out and gives up complete pain in the arse

This depends on the E30
Alex wrote:is far more reliable

Now this is not correct. An E30 if in good condition to start with is an extremely reliable car, more so than most modern cars and a correctly maintained E30 with have a lot less chance of leaving you stuck on the side of the road going nowhere unlike a modern car where even a simple problem can render them immobile!

Not only that, just wait until you do get a problem with it (and you will) and you have to pay someone to diagnose it because you dont have the correct diagnostic software, either that or something expensive goes like a turbo, DMF or some control module.

E30's are cheap to fix and the is an abundance of used parts available to do so and the are very DIY friendly unlike modern cars.

My E30 is the most reliable car i have ever owned but then its not a hound (like most are) and i correctly maintained.

Don't get me wrong, having a modern car for daily duties is a good idea (i have an E46) but dont for one second think that it will be more reliable or cost effective to run.

Oh and if your only getting 20 mpg from your 325i then there is something wrong with it.

One last question, how many miles has your golf done?

it drives better, Clutch is lighter, brake pedal feels better, steering is lighter, feels very tight.

far better inside = alot more modern, isnt as worn as a 20 year old car, doesnt smell like a 20 year old car, seats are comfyer than sports seats. i personally think its a better car to sit in as a car.

the sport needs motronic 1.3 as the original is up the swanny, before its sold it will get done.

golf has 80k on the clock with full service history and cambelt was changed 5k ago :)

Lighter does not mean better, its just preferable to you.

Again, just because its more modern inside does not mean its better, just your POV.
Sorry but not all E30's smell like 20 year olds cars, mine certainly doesn't.
As for the seats being more comfortable, thats just your opinion based on your body. You cannot say one is better than the other and a general comment.

Best get that sport fixed and sold as so you have some spare coin for when the Golf goes wrong.

that`s a good point. In my opinion the e30 interior is well designed and comfy except the backseat (it`s a bit of a pain for taller persons) the clutch, brake and steering i can`t find modern cars much more improved at this point. Engine can be reliable if maintained as bss325i said, for e.g my 316i m40 engined touring can get 30-35 mpg without too much struggle and the injectors have never been touched so it`s a bit more to get by cleaning them (i know it`s not a super fast torque-ish engine but it`s reliable), as for the gadgets let`s be honest if you`re not a OEM freak you can get plenty of all in one media centers off ebay and with a bit of modding you can get touch screen, dvd player, gps and all kind of new exciting stuff. The thing i like the most at e30`s and hate at plenty of new cars is the metal used in building them, it`s too fecking thin i once rested my elbow on a friend`s renault clio for 10 min and made a very big dent in the roof :o .... so my point is do not judge e30`s so hard because a well maintained e30 is as good as a modern car if not better

My bro had a minty mint E34 M5 back in the day. I drove a barker of the same breed not so long ago.You wouldn't believe they came out of the same factory. I'm a firm believer in the 'if it ain't sorted, it ain't worth f*ck all' school of thought now...

Alex you should have bought the 2.0 tdi much much much better engine.

I bought my wife a mk5 GT TDI last Oct and it is a very good car and cirtainly is one of the better handeling front wheel drive cars I have ever driven.

Better than a e30? as an every day hack yes, as a hoby not a chance in twenty years time my golf will be in china donating its body to new toasters.

Oh and both cars give me a bad back if I drive them for two long.

A lad at work recently picked up a MK4 130 brake oil burner, he raves about it, bags of torque etc and fueling costs that nearly make me weep. Drives nice, seats are quite good - but there is nothing special about it to me.

Id be tempted for the Mrs, as she does a 50mile commute every day, but her Lupo returns good enough MPG, can fit into spaces other cars cant (terrace street parking) and most importantly, doesnt have a dual mass flywheel - one of the main reasons id avoid a modern diseasel

I'll stick with my characterful Touring for now 8)

I drove my bosses 1.6FSI mk5 today. Handling was nice, however controls were too light, brakes were over assisted, the clutch was so light it offered no feedback and changing gear was not a mechanical experience but a cold flick of the switch feel.

Quite enjoyed it though as a daily hack, was easy to drive.

Alex, you saw my car at Santa pod last year but thats beside the point. You did yourself no favors with your "warts an all" thread on your sport as its clear to see that its was not the 4 or so grands worth it cost you.

Btw, converting to later motronic is not a cure for running problems. If you have running problems check the basics first.

I heard from somewhere that the VW Golfs (Mark V) costs VW alot more than they expected in design/manufacture hence their profit margin per vehicle sold is not as big as expected. I think they were told to reduce the cost base of the VW Golf (Mk VI) generation.

I've a Mk4 Golf Diesel as my daily. I've owned it two and a half years, and so far I've replaced the starter motor, the alternator (which both broke within a week of each other), the windscreen, cam belt (first thing I do when I get a new car), all discs and pads and clutch.

It has done 222,000 miles and still starts on the button and drives great, no wear on the seats and on the whole looks quite presentable when I can be bothered washing it.

When I went to Great Yarmouth at the weekend, it returned an average 64mpg. Around town it's 55mpg+

Yeah it's a bit boring and generic but it costs peanuts to run.

Alex i am so glad you have finaly found something you enjoy :D

IMO modern cars are something everyone should try , at least once ? and i know you really wanted a 325i for long enough, sadly yours hasn't been too forgiving, as you know I can of course help with this should you stick with it,

just be aware that if and when the golf goes wrong it will be very expensive, sadly new cars are disposable most are familiar with this,

happy motoring fella, if your passing by then call in :D
