Parking Brakes (specifically Renault ones)

Ello,

I've just heard from my father in law that he has to spend upwards of £500 on (bear in mind this comes via my wife so may be missing details through relay)...

Brake pads and handbrake shoes with "integral bearings".

He has a 58 plate Laguna with a weird electric parking brake and it's still under warranty.

I know brakes arent usually covered under warranty, but what about handbrake shoes?

Surely it's not right that a car's handbrake shoes should need doing after 2 and a half years?

All seems a bit wrong to me. Especially as Mercedes replaced the SBC controller ECU on my car last month under warranty... on an 8 year old car!

The Renault Laguna 2 doesn't have parking brake shoes.

What that have are conventional rear pads and discs with the park brake mech built into the rear caliper.

The reason why the rear pads and discs are expensive to change is because the wheel bearing is part of the brake disc. Same as a Renault Traffic incidently.

Time is irrelevant if the car has done lots of miles.

It's a Laguna 3, sorry, I should have made that clear. I forgot 58 plate was switchover. Also it has the optional electrically actuated parking brake if that makes any difference.

Laguna 2 sounds like VW style where the disc is effectively the wheel bearing assembly and there's a cable to actuate the caliper as a parking brake.

I stopped working for Renault just as the Laguna 3 came out so hardly did any work on them but to hazzard a guess the set up will be the same.

The newer meganes also have the bearings in the discs If he wants to save money could probably get it done for less than half of the quoted price if he went with aftermarket parts.
