i'm supposed to be going to see a mk 1 gti tomorrow for my mrs..
Seller called tonight reporting a 'pop' sound being made after the oil being topped up (to the 'full' line) and the car started..
Oil pressure light is on, and apparently oil coming out from above the filter.
I'm thinking its a dodgy sender that's popped-assumong there is a sender on the top of the filter?
Am i right??
Thanks

yeah the sensor is on top of the filter housing, should have a yellow wire going to it.
I'm sure that as well as a light coming on, a buzzer should sound for low oil pressure warning.

hi lee, apparently the buzzer does sound.
The fact that oil squirts out when car is running suggests that the oil pump is ok?
I'm thinking oil is either leaking past the sender (split diaphram?) or as suggested above there's a leak from the filter.
Owner supposedly sending pic of area tomorrow morn before we head to see it (400mile round trip.)

The oil pump/filter hosuing/sensor set up on these engines is utter dogshit. The main issue is the pressure relief valve in the pump. They can stick open = no oil pressure, or stick closed - about 200 psi, oil pissing out everywhere and when it gets really high, it can even hold the hydraulic lifters open. The two switches (one for the light and one for the buzzer leak like a f*cked fridge anyway.
First thing I'd do with one of these turds is to drop the sump (very, very easy), wash it out and bang a new pump on - genuine would be nice.

Maybe they put too much oil in it?

As soon as it arrives here thats the plan- bit of a fettle then she'll be good.
As for the oil level, it was only at max on the stick.
All good.
