Recently bought a 2003 MX5 for track duties, and it is a magnificent tool for circular based lappery. So controllable, great fun.
But yes, every person I know has rung me to share hairdresser jokes. And the rust? Damn. It is barely 9 years old and the underside is shocking.
So in short, my one experience of japanese cars is a shoddily built set of cheap parts thrown together by some very talented suspension engineers.
Gives 100bhp away to my 335i, and laps 1.5s faster round Combe. I have to wear a false beard and glasses in the Mazda though in case anyone sees me.
Martin.

Now that Croydons most wanted has bought one, the shame is too much !

They rust quite badly though don't they? Interested to hear what you thought if it though. its a possibility for a next car, i really want an s15 like this but I'm not sold on getting finance or a loan to buy it tbhTouringMatt wrote:Only ever owned one jap car, easy to tune being a turbo, expensive to run fuel wise, and the fastest car i've owned/driven
It was utterly reliable, sailed through MOT's, but felt fairly detached to drive, E30 has far more character.

Mine was only 6 years old when i sold it, lad at work brought it (sadly muppetized it, badly) so see it most days, no rust problems to report that i know of, paint quality was never great though, the older s13's like most old cars, can be rot boxes.
I'd need disposable income for one of these again, flames on up shifts, turbo boost kicks and easy sideways action brought out the worst in me, amazed i never lost my licence, too easy to go too quick.
Oh, and in the words of the fellas at my MOT place, 'there are no decent cars on the road, they are all shit, the jap ones are just slightly less shit'

MX5s are an absolute laugh to drive!
MJJ_ZX6RR, maybe you bought ours - when we sold it the underside was dissolving badly, despite my best efforts to keep the damn thing clean.
The japanese make any type of car you could possibly want:
Engaging little sports cars, reliable family cars, pure performance cars, 4x4s.... and they do it very well indeed. They just can't get the glamour right. My personal favourite is the AE86 "Trueno".
I'm not a scooby fan though - noisy, ugly things, even the 22B and the P1 I'm afraid, although I am sure they are great to drive - I've had a ride in an RB320 and it felt very, very fast.

E86 , Initial D's car!
The RB320 is pretty rapid but the 22B and even the P1 blow them away. The one thing I would say about my P1 is , it is one of the easiest cars to drive. Pottering around town or out on country roads , it gives a great amount of confidence to the driver.

This is very true, the prices for parts on Jap cars is horrific for even the most basic stuff, you can of course buy some ADL Blueprint parts but they can be a load of crap and are still expensive, I used to work for Mazda as a Tech and you would cringe at some of the bills we used to dish out to poor unsuspecting old grinners who thought Japanese cars were the last word in reliabilty.bss325i wrote:Wait until you have to buy parts for a jap car. Euros stock f*ck all for jap turds and a lot of jap parts a dealer only.B7 wrote:And whats that e39 gonna be changed for? Possibly a Lexus as I neither have the time or energy any more to keep plugging in diagnostics to find out what the next f*cking bill is! I need a car I can rely on totally. THATS where jap cars win hands down.
Not only that but some parts are serious £££!

i have owned a forrester previously, and have a classic imprezza wrx (import) -looks stock even the wheels are std- i agree with all those who mention the, um, "poor" image, however it does not mean everyone who has one is actually a d*ckhead!
i have a 318iS and an alfa 155 and an uno T, all of which are different and have their own merits, its bit blinkered to dismiss a whole nations cars cos of a (shite) american movie!

Just p/exd my fooked ticking timebomb daily driver TDCI Mondeo with 2 weeks MOT left for this :

Only picked it up today - so far very impressed - seems well screwed together and the handling is nice and tight.
Came with a full MOT with no advisories ( i know the garage and they are trustworthy ) 93k on the clock with full dealer history.
Only thing I can find wrong with it is the central locking on the passenger door doesnt work.

I spent ages on saturday morning going through Auto express, what car and various other review sites - the number of bad reviews was tiny compared to the good ones.
Compare that to reviews of most modern diesel turds - where you get dozens of people complaining about injector failure, fuel pump failure, DMF's shatting themselves etc etc
Early days yet - I'm ordering a service kit for it shortly so will see how easy it is to do.
Never thought I'd buy a non-european car - especially something Korean
- but Its really growing on me

I've just been given a bright red 1993 Mitsubishi GTO with just 60,000 miles, which initially wouldn't drive for more than a few hundred yards before its automatic gearbox lost the will to transfer power; fresh gearbox ATF and a filter change appears to have sorted it.bss325i wrote:Now they really are a sorry spastic! A GTO i can understand but a 2.0 V6 hair dressers car.capri_rob wrote:My best mate has a Mistubishi FTO which he absolutely loves but I just dont see the appeal![]()

It's not been MOTed in 10 years but seems to run pretty well, with just a few minor electrical gremlins to sort, the worst being that the alternator rectifier appears to have packed up, causing a 3 Amp drain on the battery.
Quite a rare sight nowadays, and should make a good winter car, being four wheel drive and all...
