Love it, proper car, better than an E30, i'd happily tool about in a poo brown R5

My first R5 was the same flavour as this one, except it was rattle can sprayed BRG :D And mercilessly thrashed down the local byways, I was 15 or so when I had it. The benefits of my father working on a farm :D 850cc and about 3bhp
As i recall handbrake turns had to be performed in reverse as it was connected to the front wheels! That was a top summer that, it finally packed in and my mates and I took claw hammers and breeze blocks to it :D

Burn out, Jesus style :D (not much hair in attendence though!)

My best mate (still is,the tw4t) sat on the roof and me and my muscle bound frame finger some holes :D

^^ Some stupid French thing I think you'll find. R4's had a set up where the engine was back to front and the gearbox (transaxle) pointed to the front of the car. They had some spazzy gear linkages which ran about 50 feet back to the dash to those "quirky" (read shit) umbrella gearsticks.

Lotus used the box arrangement in the Lotus Europas of the 70's.

I followed a minty Europa last Saturday, the gear changes were flawless and smooth :D

Not at all Lee, the French in the foresight predicted the "diffin' culture" and didn't want their fine R5's associated with such down market mota sportz :D

I've seen them with bungee straps holding the linkage rods up!!!! The only way Lotus "lost" the mahoooosive throw was by making the gearlever about 2" tall.

To be fair, drive a sorted Europa and the gearchange is very snickety snick. :D And it was the perfect solution to a true mid engine'd design. Engine bang behind the drivers left ear and the gearbox out the back to allow a shallow load tray to go above. Sublime handling if all a little light over the nose.

At least chapman made something that worked (occasionally) well out of something that came from a country stinking of garlic and snails! :D
