Hey guys,
I am a big time lurker on here. The wiki is excellent and I don't usually have anything interesting to say!
However a colleague has phoned me to from a job to say there is a 1972 Mercedes 350sl in this guys garage and he wants £1000 for it.
I've not seen it, so no pictures yet.
It was driven in 13 years ago and never went out again. Essentially I understand it to be a complete car that did run.
Garage is a bit damp so I'm expecting rust, if I go and look I will take my assessment tools!
On the limited info what do people think should I pursue this at £1000?

It could be a diamond in the rough or £150 of (rusty)light iron. Most were the latter at 15 years old so I would not hold your breath.
Prices are slowly appreciating but many are still getting scrapped as they are not cost effective to save.

Thank you Pete, your opinion confirms what I thought.
I'm not scared of having to do some welding but wouldn't want to be filling a bottomless pit with MIG wire.
Paintwork is a major cost to consider as if it needed extensive painting I would need to get it done professionally.
Any idea what parts and panel availability is like?

If you buy it for 1k and can spend less that 9k getting it near perfect then go for it. They are definately appreciating and are becoming surprisingly popular as daily drivers again, well where I live anyway...
I used to have a 450slc and if I ever got rid of my 325i I would probably look at one of these again.

I was looking at these a couple of weeks ago. Check ebay for the price spares or repair cas go for 
At a grand, get it bought. wash it, photos and get it on the bay and it'll return more than your investment without a doubt.

I followed this up and decided it was a no go for me.
The car is a 77 not a 72 so not free tax, red and only 79k miles.
Both the car and garage could not have been wetter, full of condensation looked like it had been for years. A shame really as it was complete and original but expecting serious rust.
Did my research and the tired cars with MOT's start at 2k,in comparison at 1k this looked like too much risk and the guy wasn't having any negotiations, looked like a £500 car.
I'm sure you could clean it up and make something on it but it would only be change. This isn't my business so the hassle of getting it moving and going etc won't be worth it.
