A guy was emptying his unit a few doors up from us at work today and amongst a few interesting cars, including one of those citroen/maserati things, was this

It needs a bit of tlc but overall it's in very good condition. I've no idea if they're any good or not but it's a fine looking thing. Cue the French haters!

Why did they enclose the rear wheels just for aero? and why isnt it done much nowdays? I presume there is conflict between the aero / styling / marketing men in road cars in general now days oh and the accountants?

Nope sorry - the only thing that differentiates the SM from other French cars is that they're not a common sight on the roads. Same with the DS which cheese eating fanbois also seem to get moist over :chuckle:

I'm sure they have all the other French traits - tempramental, poorly built, stupidly engineered, difficult to work on, overly complex suspension, built with poor quality metal with no rust protection. Its not pretty - its just weird looking.
In essence the same as all the other gallic junk.

Does nothing for me whatsoever.

Next !

Seventies French cars were fanatstic. You had the style - the SM, CX, 504 Coupe and Convertible and even the Renault 17 with the slatted rear 3/4's were pretty neat. Back then, the regular Frog stuff was good - they rode and drove really well and if Citroens weren't especially tough, Peugeots and Renaults were. The Renault 18 and Pug 504 were near enough unbreakable.

Renault Alpines don't do much for me, although I'll doff my cap to an A110 or an 8 Gordini.

SM's are really cool. 504's were very tough and I think they were still making them in Kenya and Nigeria up until 2006. Also a lot of the 80's French cars like the 405 did not seem rust much. Plus old Peugeot steering wheels smell nice. :)

..been getting a bit moist for CXs recently :wan: The DS has become a bit tainted by the polo neck jumper /Tuscany / Islington/ Saab 900 Convertible crowd... I'll have a Pallas with Moon Discs please

+1

A CX is far cooler than the DS. I had a '80 CX prestige (as above, but silver) back in the late 80s, it was pretty crap but it did look awesome slumped in a pool of its own fluids on the hard shoulder :)

That is absolutely stunning. Robert Opron* knew how to style cars alright. Holidays in France in the seventies were just epic - these, the original non quad lamp DS19's and fifties 2CV's were to be seen in big numbers.

*He's just turned 80 and did the SM, original GS and the CX plus the Alpine A310 and the *cough* , the Fuego.

Very cool, especially in orange, but it lacks the purity of line of the Pacer :)

Not the first time a rear wheel has left thge building on a wide wheeled E34. A new set of bolts correctly torqued would be a plan.
