most manufacturers have had camless engines running for years, i know lotus did at least 10 years ago. the problem is all the sustems to control the valves were way too big to ever package into a normal car. i guess like all things, as the electronics and materials improve the size reduces and the reliability increases to the point where they become workable (if expensive) with costs reducing over time.

it's a technology which will be in road cars at some point, and the benefits of total control of valve timing and lift would be incredible, way beyond what any of the current variable cam systems can do.
cheers,

didn't Manchester Uni develop a two stroke that had oil in the sump rather then the fuel?

Remeber reading that the large outboard two stokes are most thermally efficient engines, and the most thirsty!

my 225 Jhonson bolted to my 18 foot Wellcraft certainly had some beans!

Queen's Uni Belfast had/has a 350 bhp 3.2 V6 Jag/Orbital 2-stroke supercharged engine in the foyer of the Engineering dept. Emmissions were an issue!
