wouldnt be supprised if manufactures start fitting a really long ratio 7 speed imagine doing 70-80mph doing barely more than tickover. would be excellent on the juice :D

Why are manufacturers fitting more and more gears?

Is it purely for marketing?

Lexus IS F has an 8-speed.

Funny that in the E92 M3 you either choose 6-speed manual/7-speed DCT wheras in the E46 M3 you either choose 6-speed manual/6-speed SMGII which is the same gearbox just hydraulically operated.

Its for economy so when you on the motorway the engines spinning at a lower RPM. A bit like what overdrive was.
