i have a costumer who want a e46 m3 engine in his mk1 escort .
I have had a look on the forums to see if it has been done before and couldn't find anything.
just wondered if firstly it was possible and secondly what would need doing.
all help greatly appreciated danny
also if this is not possible what other engines producing 300+ bhp could i use.
but no turbos

Not sure about this but I know a guy who cut the body of a 323 compact and welded a mk1 escort shell on.

What sort of freak chops up a proper chariot to put the bits in a sorry cart sprung 'scort ?

Surely there are much simpler ways of frightening yourself in an escort, IE Cosworth conversion, or is that too easy ?

An e36 m3 engine is cheaper and easier to fit for 300BHP

e46 2 issuues

throttle is fly by wire
Electronics are complicated

2 options stand alone efi with mech throttle conversion, or reflashed ecu to run stand alone complete with the orginal electronic throttle conversion.

I would go 3.0 m3 on standalone efi, carbon airbox, and the stronger/lighter 5 speed box

And that is going to be a tight engien in a mk1

e21jason

i really think its going to be tight and am trying to persuade him to use 3.0 m3 power as i could just rewire the shell using an e30 loom/clocks fuse box ect ect and then most of the electronics would be plug and play
i would only have to worrie about exhaust/ engine mounts / steering and brakes
so not to much

but it will all come down to if it will actually fit
any info or ideas please let me no

Forget it. The bay isn't long enough so you would need to cut a big hole in the bulkhead and the gear stick would end up where the hand brake lever is.

You can get a YB cosworth to nearly 300bhp without a turbo.

Try old skool ford forum and passion ford forum.

A N/A YB cosworth will need new pistons to raise the compression ratio, some mental cams, head work, a decent exhaust manifold and some 48mm throttle bodies.

This is uncanny.. as I'm thinking of putting a 1300 Ford crossflow into an E46 M3.. :)

No chance the I-6 will fit without cutting up the bulkhead in a big way. Even the 2.0 Pinto (8v and Cossie YB-Turbo version) needs the bulkhead seam cutting off (Ford did this in the factory when making RS2000's). You need an I-4 or a V8/V6.

Sensible options:

- Cosworth YB with a supercharger instead of a turbo. Maybe even se a Milington Diamond 2.4 alloy block, 300BHP easy in any case and the engine fitting parts are all off-the-shelf.

- Honda S2000 2.0, 240bhp in some versions? (might be after chipping from memory)

- Toyota/Lexus (Yamaha designed) 2.0 16v BEAMS, similar numbers to the S2000. Titanium valves!

- TVR (rover based) V8, you can get a bellhousing to bolt the Cossie T5 box up.

- Vauxhall 2.0 16v redtop after a lot of tuning.

- The later M3 V8 would be epic! 8)

- Ring Mountune and get the real thing: 1.8/2.0 BDG. winkeye

never seen or heard of a straight six escort, for the simple reason it wont fit.
well yes any thing can fit but you would have to have at least 2 cylinders under the dash to get any sort of weight distrbution.
it seems like money is not a limiting factor so either a 2.4 millington or a built redtop will both make 300hp and are made to put in escorts.

If I remember correctly you can get aftermarket cam-covers for the Zetec/Redtop/Cossie that make the engine look like a BDA/G. All the pipes etc for the redtop swap are readily available as a kit too.

I would still go for the M3 V8, plenty of room for that...
