yes mate,

i've been breaking a lot of e36 m3 evo's lately, so they've taken a lot of my spare time.

and then a friend of mine came to have a look at it and said
"i've got to get me one of them", so off he went and bought an e39 m5 to break for his bits. then he twisted my arms for my engine mounts and gearbox mounting. so about four weeks ago i was actually going backwards with this!

since then i've made myself another set of engine mounts, and made another gearbox crossmember. last weekend i finished the exhaust system. my plan for tomorrow is to sort the prop, and then thats most of the stuff done underneath.

i thought it was about time i did a little update...............

propshaft on and finished
exhaust on and finished
remote oil filter mounted
i've decided to use the e32 750 hydraulic booster for the brakes.
its mounted and can be activated by the brake pedal, just got to get some pipes made up to finish the brakes.
fitted a new water pump
i've just about finished cutting down the loom, i want to start the engine in-situ before i trim any more off it.

i couldn't find anywhere to put the e32 reservoir, it was just too big.
it was easier for me to find room for two e36 reservoirs. they'll hold almost as much oil. the e32 reservoir holds oil for it's self-levelling suspension, so without that, these should be sufficient.

Wiring wise, what "parts" does one need to have from the original car? I guess the engine wiring alone is not sufficient, and that you'd also need -at least- the clocks and its associated wiring?

Thanks and good luck with the rest of the swap (you should be used to it by now:D)!

the ecu has five plugs going into it, four from the engine, and one from the 'car loom' .
the car loom plug contains the signals from the 'fly-by-wire-throttle'. other wires on this plug are for the fuel pump and the instrument cluster.
the abs/dsc module is also a big part of the plug, as its looking for 'spinning wheels' via the abs sensors, the rear right wheel being the speed signal for the dsc/ and instrument cluster.
other wires on this plug are for the steering angle sensor, which is on the steering column. also, there is the 'ok' from the ews.
the ecu---instrument cluster---dsc/abs are all linked by the can-bus network

well............
been putting in some serious hours into this project lately......
two weeks ago, Uwe contacted me to say a friend of his could flash my ecu to work perfectly with just a handful of wires connected, which makes life a whole lot easier for this conversion.
so, through Uwe, the ecu went off to germany, and two weeks later it came back. while it was away, i got stuck in with the other parts that needed doing. the ecu was also installed with alpha-n, so it now runs maf-less, and power is now 440bhp.
a little bit more tidying up to do, with the c101 plug, and i may have to put another silencer in the system. there's no cats on the exhaust, the ecu has had the cat-delete.
i grabbed a quick video of it running, not easy with one hand holding the camera!

thanks for your help Uwe

i was just finishing off wiring in the fuel pump relay, and thought, i'd better check the oil....smack on the top mark.
finished off the fuel pump relay.......checked the oil again
filled it with water, checked the oil again
i dont know what i was thinking, lol.
got the ecu from the house, plugged it in, connected the battery,
turned on the ignition, fuel pump buzzed into life, turned the key to position 3, expecting nothing...but it burst into life.
i let it run for about 10 seconds then turned it off to check for any leaks, no probs.
cranked it up again, running sweet, blipped the throttle......nothing :( ,
switched it off, unplugged the throttle, plugged it back in, re-started it, throttle was fine :D
i started the car around midday, and have been numb with excitement all day

Did you retain the ABS system, being that it's no longer needed for the engine to rev at full capability?

Do all the clocks work? Seems like you have the stock instrument panel.

Oh and please share your driving impressions, road kills, etc. !

i didn't keep the abs, as you say its not needed anymore.

all my instruments work, but i've not connected the revcounter yet as i dont have a v8 coding plug to modify yet.

i've not had it on the road yet, as since getting it running, i've been busy with putting a m60 into another e30 for someone else, which is done, and i'm halfway through another s50 into an e30 for someone else.

well.....

i finally got the car to 'drivable' standard,
and took it out for a few miles this afternoon...

it makes a perfect v8 rumble, although i do have a slight 'blow' along the exhaust somewhere, it just makes a 'ticking' sound under heavy load.

i have a small issue with the belt/pulleys....
one pulley was damaged whilst the engine was in the e39, and i hadn't noticed when i was doing the conversion, and it has shredded the outer 2 'vee's',
and so i didn't want to give it too much rpm today as i didn't want to be stranded somewhere, now that i know it will be ok, i'll take it a bit higher tomorrow winkeye
i'll get it changed shortly

the torque is monsterous, even on completly dry roads today, it would easily lose traction in second or third 8)

cant wait to push it a bit further tomorrow :D

I am working with a friend on a project of fitting a "modern" ABS instead of the E30 ABS. Can't say too much right now just in case it doesn't work and we make fools of ourselfs winkeye
