Cheers Will! :D

I've bolted some more stuff on. :D
For a short while, the engine looked like this:

Image

Hiding somewhere in there are my injectors, which I had cleaned by a company called Big CC. They build properly ridiculous (mostly) turbo motorcycles. If your injectors need a clean (mine did), it's worth a trip over to Wokingham just to check it out. They're not overly pricey either.

While I was there, I also deleted the wiring and plugs for the right hand MAF, EGR valve and Fuel vent guff, got one of these:

Image

which now lives here:

Image

That now reads inlet air temperature.

I then had a cock of a time for a while. There are two vacuum take offs for the brake servo at the back of the throttle bodies, attached to which are (unsurprisingly) two vacuum pipes. These go into a T-piece, then to the servo. The pipes also turn hard over time and split when removed. At just short of £50 to replace (with original BMW parts) I thought sod it, I'll just cut them down. Even using lube, they were a right **** to get on, not helped by restricted access. Efookin'ventually they were on there:

Image

Next job, pop the cam position sensor plugs on, fit the bracket which supports the engine harness trunking on. Job's a dream. Except, it wasn't! The bracket was in the way of the cam sensors, and the sensors were in the way of the bracket bolts. Arse! Anyway after a bit of a sweary fight, with my hand jammed down the back of the engine, I got the buggers all done. Just plug the knock sensor plug into the bottom of the trunking, bish bosh, done. Except... with the vacuum hoses sitting further forward, the knock sensor plug needed re-routing under the pipes. No problem. Well, I say that.. There wouldn't have been if the sensor wiring was 10mm longer. As it was, I had around not enough bloody space between the trunking and the plug to get my fingers into (at an awkward angle) to guide the plug home. Bugger! After some more swearing, it was done. Just the new ICV balance pipe to fit between the throttle body banks to do and I could bolt the plenum on. Yep, what a twat that was! Tight as fook! It all felt like some kind of crap test of resolve or something!

Aaaanyway! I bolted the plenum, bell mouths, plenum lid, airboxes and tubes on, poured some fluids in here and there, turned it over in 15(ish) second bursts with the plugs out and sparky stuff disconnected until the oil light went out, turned it over a few more times and plopped some plugs in. Then I bolted some more stuff on, turned the key and......

It made a good noise!

I initially thought there was an air leak as the tickover was a little irratic/rpm took a while to die down properly, but seeing as the heads are now flowing a bit more air I thought a bit of driving might settle things down. After just a few miles, it seems to be doing the trick. :D

Some of those miles were driving to Coopers BMW in Banstead to get an MOT this afternoon. The bugger boiled up on the ramp after a while ticking over, nearly giving the tester a boiling shower. The test was aborted. I planned to drop the coolant out and put fresh in there, so just had straight water in there. There's a decent chance of an airlock too I guess. The old girl's front end is up in the air now ready for a flush through/bleed/fresh anti-freeze, which I'll do tomorrow hopefully. On the up side, the guys at Coopers were pretty into the car, which was cool. It was also pretty cool driving it for more than a mile without it knocking its tits off! :drive: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hopefully I'll be holding an MOT certificate in my hand tomorrow! winkeye
Can't wait to give it some proper stick!

Cheers! Dave. :D

I've been thinking of how to get some footage done without incriminating myself Will. 8O I best get to a private test track eh! winkeye I'll get something sorted when I get a chance. 8)

I've not given it proper hoof yet Glenn, but it's already shown a distinct lack of traction in second and third. :D The tyres are still pretty new and the geometry needs sorting yet. I've not been in an M5. I really like the engine character! I was expecting a ton of low end torque, but at low RPM it feels really civilised, like a big pussy cat!

I need to do some research into what geo settings would be good for a bit of *spirited* road stuff. A bit of a tweak for the track wouldn't be the end of the world. As always, a bit of advice from the clever people of the forum would be cool. :D
From the few miles I've done so far, the HSD's feel pretty good too. Not too "crashy" over harsh bumps, the damping feels better quality than the price would suggest. Over all the chassis feels pretty tight and responsive. 8)

I did a bit of airflow improvement on the grills. here's a before:

Image

And a (spot the difference) after:

Image

Every little helps! I also did similar to the rest of the grills, but didn't get a pic.

I also found a good part of the reason that it spat water out when it was been MOT'd. I'd bought a cap for my Volvo header tank off of fleabay. The green caps are rated at 1.5 bar. I bought a green cap. It turns out it's rated at 0.5 bar. Obviously, I should have checked it, but didn't. So now wearing a 1.5 bar cap, and with anti-freeze, it's (unshockingly) holding it's water a lot better.

Oh yea, I got this today! :D

Image

Whoop! I best get some road tax tomorrow and take it for a bit of a drive! winkeye  :D

Cheers!

Thanks Gooseygander. :thumb: It's turned into a long read! 8O It's good to know this this is getting read. All helps with enthusiasm! :) I took the old girl out for a drive down one of my old biking roads. Nice and open with lots of roundabouts. Even short shifting at around 5k (I haven't sorted the tacho yet), it's a LOT of fun!! One thing though, is that the gearbox is pretty noisy. Hopefully this is down to the oil being too thin for the lightened flywheel. They're known to cause rattle. I've got some thicker oil coming, so I'll know what's what during the week I hope!

I've not done tons, just a bit of fiddling.
I made and fitted some 10mm spacers to drop the steering column down. I'm pretty sure my seats are sitting lower than standard, so it now feels more of a natural driving position, which is nice. :)
Ages ago, I got the angle grinder on my front valance to get more air to the rad. I finally got round to tidying up the holes I made a little, though I'll be neatening it further at some point:

Image

To direct air into the rad, you may have spotted a piece of under tray which I cut and slotted above the bottom hole:

Image

Which is held in by an ally bracket:

More to come!

Cheers! Dave. :D

Well, lordy, it's been an age since I last updated this! 8O
I had a little whoopsie and hit a curb at the end of last year which meant replacing the rear arms and rear beam. I'm not sure if the beam was bent (they're a bugger to measure all the relevant mounting points accurately) but I replaced it anyway. Re-bracing the trailing arms and cutting off the beam adjusters was somewhat of a drag (to say the least), so I thought I'd take the oppertunity to do a few bits and pieces which were bugging me while I was there.

I'd noticed that the diff felt a bit "loose" under very light load, so decided to whip it apart and see what was what. It seemed to be working perfectly under load. This is what I found:

Image

Here's its guts:

Image

You might have already noticed that it's not your run of the mill LSD. It is an uber rare four plate 1.5 way unit. winkeye Result! These work a bit differently to a standard LSD. They have just about no preload, so lock only under load, which explains the "loose" feeling under light load. The plates weren't in terrible condition, but it would have beed daft not to replace them while it was apart. Thanks to Demlotcrew for starting his "LSD Units - Ask me anything" thread, and him and Gareth for advice. :thumb:
So, this is what the plates looked like:

Image

These were pretty much perfect after a quick scotchbrite:

Image

New friction plate(s):

Image

Back in its house:

Image

Back together with casing rust removed and a lick of anti-rust primer and hammerite. :D :

Image

I wasn't really happy with the rear brake set up. There was a few mm of pad overhang which was bugging me. It wasn't the end of the world, but, while it was apart...
So, here's a new rear disc next to an old stock E30 disc:

Image

I got some steel plate, grabbed my drill and angle grinder, made a couple of holes and lots of sparks, and two of these got welded to my newly braced trailing arms:

Image

Now, why didn't I do this the first time around? I'll tell you. Handbrake shoes. That's why. Very simply, there's no discs this size which use stock E30 sized handbrake drums. So, I got hold of some of the larger shoes and made them look like this:

Image

They now fit like this:

Image

Here's the built up rear beam before it went in:

Image

More to follow!

Cheers guys! Dave. :D

Nicely done Will. :D The discs are 338x26 from an E90 330, which (with the extra width over the 300x20 1 series discs which were fitted) suit the rear calipers properly now. :)

Cheers Neilios. :)

Hi Crossie,
Yep, still got it.
It's up for sale. I'll write a decent ad for it soon. If it doesn't sell I'll break it...
