Hi all,
Has anyone done a conversion from the standard airflow meter to MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor ?
If so, any advice would be most welcome.
PS The engine is otherwise unmodified, and will remain so.
Best Regards
Dave Seer

Hi dave. I'd say your best bet is to PM gunni or shepsevo on here as they seem to know a fair bit about it & should be able to help you out
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

This is not a great route as a MAP sensor's output is opposite to that of the stock parts. Typically the AFM would be ditched in favour of running alpha-N using a TPS, or a MAF sensor.
Ps) What engine does your car have?

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Hi,
2 litre S14.
Sounds like it's a non starter then - I wasn't planning to change the engine management system. I'm just fed up with the AFM being so problematic - I like the idea of elimination of moving parts.

Welcome, it's an unusual car you've got there, I like the S14 tucked under standard bodywork. Give ShepsEvo3 - Paul a ring at circuit motors at Castle Coombe he'll be able to set you on the right track.

Unusual, yes, but the poor old thing, bless it - showing its' age, perticularly the exposed wiring. Although its' not quite the shed it was when I took delivery of it in 2004, and despite the neglect / abuse of previous owners, and its' age, barring a duff battery its' never failed to start, AND it'll still do 40mpg on a long run if I drive it carefully !
Mind you, I wouldn't give tuppence for the dogleg gearbox - and 6 speeds would be nice !
Anyway, many thanks - I'll get in touch with Paul as you suggest.

Sounds like a plan - don't be too down on the AFM - there are several folks out there who suggest its not that much of a restriction... Plus there are many other things that can cause problems as you will find out
You do have a super car in the 320is...
A good restoration!
Going Alpha N doesn't change the ECU fundamentally, but it does add a few bits on as a piggy back. Not as flexible as a standalone, but very good nonetheless from what I have seen.
Welcome to the zone!!

Thanks Mikey_Boy,
RE Restoration:
To be honest, there are very few areas of the car which require much attention - The engine could do with timing chains, guides etc, and maybe a look at the bores / pistons (it has a bit of piston slap when cold, but this soon sorts itself out), oil drain hoses & lower gaskets, oil pump drive chain, and maybe some new black crackle to the cam cover. The only other problem is the wiring in the engine bay, suffering from the effects of long term heat & sun.
Other than that, there's no real rot in it, and I've already done a lot of running resto work on it (interior etc.), and undone a few electrical "mods"(!), so it's pretty good

Great stuff - sounds like you have a good 'un!!
Be careful though - I though my engine just needed a few bits and bobs, and look where that got me!!
Enjoy it - great car, great engine!

OUCH !... I feel for you !
In certain respects, up to a point at least, a neglected or abused S14 (rather like mine) is better than one that's been F - ahem, I mean messed about with - no incompetent fingers in the works !
Apart from having had the car since 2004, and all the routine maintenance and driving I've done in it over the ensuing period, the only things I really "know" about the engine is that the tappet shims have been replaced, and also that at some point, the head has been off - not sure why. The noises it makes, both when cold (pistons) and hot (valve gear) speak volumes ! ('
') !
And if the 320is went pop, I think I'd just chuck it in the garage where my poor old 318is is, and drive that instead - It's in much better condition overall, I've had it from 46000 miles, and I know it inside out - it's a good one. Just can neither afford nor justify running 2 cars ATM.
I'm hopefully going to be in a position to sell one of them this year.
Anyway, back to the topic - a brand new Bosch AFM has come up on e-bay in Italy - just waiting for the seller to advise postage cost.
