Good evening,

I am getting my E30 delivered tomorrow, so I can finally be mobile again, I am sick of buying bus tickets. In the mean time, I have already an M10B18 engine out of another 316 with the firm intention of rebuilding it. I haven't taken it apart just yet, I hope to do so sometime soon, pics will follow.

Of course, I am not going to strip down the whole thing and just rebuild it stock, no no no. I would like to make some subtle improvements to it on the way up. It is an excellent base to work on, but a budget needs to be set for starters. I wish to first see what I can find about the engine to determine that.

Of course, my priority will go to bodywork in the first place, because IMO it is useless to have a carefully rebuilt unit going into a crappy chassis, so I will assess that first and see how that affects my budget.

I am not rolling on gold, but I know what I am doing, so I can do most of it myself. After rebuilding Jaguar V12's and Porsche 2.7's, I don't think it's a BMW M10 who is going to give me much of a headache. I will decide how it all pulls together bit by bit, and my initial idea can be fairly off what I had imagined due to a lack of resource. We'll just have to wait and see.

My idea was to make it a 2.0 litre, so have it rebored, and get some work done on the head to improve flow, after having it pressure tested. It will surely need new valve guides and regrinding the valve seats as well, plus many other things I haven't thought about just yet.

Information seems hard to get by, so I am counting on the few M tenners on the zone to point out to some documentation or share their knowledge. Head porting, valve sizes, camshafts, bore size and pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft is what I would like to learn more about here.

I would like to know about the most possibilities, even the expensive ones, so just go ahead and write on.

I have come across the main differences in between the M10 variants, and if ever you have some feedback on the engine that you have rebuilt, feel free to share your experience, it will be truly appreciated.

I do have some very interesting technical data about these engines, amongst others, and I am still on the lookout for a good book. Does anybody have a good reference?

Due to the lack of information in general, I will follow up in this post as the work goes, so sit back and be patient because it won't be done by Monday morning.

Thanks for your support!
You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!!
