I don't know for a fact but I'm very sure all BMW's use the 0-1v type of lambda, if it's running rich then it's time to check the blue(?) engine temp sensor and then read the fault codes for the lambdas and check they are switching 0-1v under running conditions.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Stock E30's have two sensors, one brown for the instrument cluster and one blue for the engine ECU which fails regularly.
