I have an early 84 e30, two years ago I rebuilt an m30b35 out of a 91/92 735i but I've always wanted a v8 in it.

The car is set up for autocrossing, and last year me and my co-driver finished 1st and 3rd for the season in the class. We were a few points short of taking 1st and 2nd due to having some issues at the beginning of the season with the LSD not hooking up and some issues with rear brakes/bias.

I plan on using a 5 speed from an e34 530i m60b30 car, as I have no use for 6th gear and the 6speed is much much more expensive and is also 30lbs heavier than the 5speed.

I wish there were more affordable choices when it comes to single mass flywheels, having to pay $700 for a single mass steel flywheel is just a huge rip-off, when similar flywheels for other engines can be purchased for a fraction of the cost

Other changes to the car will be to go with 15x10 wheels and 265 width tires on all four, that will come later as it will require body work to match.

Couple shots of the car in action -

Got there a little early and shot some pics from an early group and then from the group I was in/working.

Then I started with buying an e34 540i parts car to get the engine.

Started taking it all apart, and then later on decided to try and get the m62b44 instead since I am doing all this labor might as well get the most out of it :)

Well, finally got the v8 for my e30 apart. Tomorrow I should have the cams removed and heads will be ready to be inspected/tested/rebuild by the same machine shop that worked on the m62 heads for the m62tu engine I worked on recently. This thing had a LOT of oil and coolant came out CLEAN ! So thats good. Once I put it back together with all new seals/gaskets/bolts/bearings I'll weight it as well.

My plan is to do basically almost the same as before on the m62tu + valve guides/valve job and most likely main bearings as well as rod bearings. I believe I can't really do the piston rings w/o having to re-hone and that can't really be done on these w/o sleeving so.

On to the pics, really like the dual-row chain setup vs the m62 single row. Also you'll notice lack of U-shaped guide and instead there is sprocket!

This engine has about 150k miles and shows LESS timing guide wear than the previous 2003 m62tu with 130k miles on it.

Has a regular 140amp air cooled alternator vs water cooled used on the TU.

No damage in the combustion chambers, just normal usage stuff.

Covers, pans will get blasted/tanked. Alternator/starter I'll have tested first before doing anything else.

I don't know if these are original gaskets or not. Heads have warranty stickers on them , so I think they might have been replaced once before.

I need to confirm if the heads were decked once or not though... so hopefully part numbers will tell and machine shop will measure the heads.

I am looking for another set of cleaner cams....

Various metal parts dropped off for blasting/cleaning.

Took the cams out today to inspect, two have some scoring on bearing surfaces , lobes look clean w/o any issues and same with lifters.

I am going to pull two cams out from another engine, and bring the heads over to the machine shop next weekend for a rebuild.

Pics.

To do -
get cams/lifters/caps
mark/package each lifter.
research catcams

Cleaned/blasted valve covers (the same done with the oil pans/timing covers as well)

Next I want to measure the combustion chambers on both heads to try and calculate what the difference is / or how it will change the compression ratio. I don't want to end up with engine pinging or anything of that sort.

Epic build!
What route are you going to go for with your clutch/flywheel?

Im running a 530 box on my 4.0 and for sprint/race use the ratios are perfect. I have a friend who races a 540, he swapped out the 6 speed box for a 5 speed too for the ratios

This looks like it's going to be good.

What are those wheels you have on in the first pictures?

Hi, 240mm clutch size with either JB Racing or UUC flywheel, one of the two. Wish there was a factory option for a single mass like for the m30 guys with the 533i flywheel or m5 flywheel :/

Hi, they are TRM wheels from TireRack.com 15x8 e30 specific wheels, no spacers or anything. Pretty cheap/light and worked great with Kumho V710 225 tires :)

Thanks :) I'll keep the thread posted with updates. Took an oil pump apart today for cleaning/inspecting.

Engine bearings and timing components are next, along with another set of cams for the b40 heads.

Also need to lay the harness out and get it cleaned up.
