Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of doing an m60b40 swap in the U.S., and have come to your forum to find some information and possibly source some parts.
I'm using the 5 speed manual trans from a 530i. In the U.S., there are no sources for lightweight flywheels, and stock manual transmission 530i flywheels are VERY hard to come by (and VERY heavy when you do find them!).
So, I'm looking for a source for a lightweight 530i manual trans flywheel, that I can use the stock 530i clutch kit with (the stock 530i clutch kit will hold the 4.0's increased power, correct?)
If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks,
Justin

Hi,
The 3.0 clutch will not hold the 4.0 power hike. I drove a E21 with a 4.0 using a 3.0 box, clutch and flywheel. The clutch was brand new and as soon as I touched 3000rpm it slipped to buggery.
I use a uprated 3.0 clutch in my 4.0. Iv got a billet flywheel from a company called 2020 vision/ Big bravian beauties , the flywheel is for the 4.0 but its been made so it will except the 3.0 clutch, I then am using a Helix uprated clutch and alls good. Thats if I remember it all correctly, something like that.....
Its not cheap and especially as your in the states the company that did the flywheel dicked me about and took ages.
i think, am yet to try but.... Im sure you can use a E39 M5 flywheel (lightweight ones are easy to come by) and a E46 M3 clutch or a E39 530d clutch. The 530d clutch will take the torque and likewise its easy, especially in america, to find a performance E46 clutch.
The 540 clutch is 265mm and the 530 240mm. The e46 and 530d clutches are 240mm and im 95% sure they bolt up fine....when mine gives up ill be doing it.
With all the hassle I wish id stuck with the 6 speed box. But the 530 box has great ratios and easy to find/replace.

Space-wise, all M60 / M62 / S62 flywheels are interchangeable. x62 engines need to have the additional "tooth-ring" on the flywheel due to sensors in bellhousing (if using OEM ECU).
All S62 flywheels are not compatible with E46 M3 clutches, it is very rough to say that they would be as there are so many alternatives around. The problem with S62 flywheels & clutch kits is that they come with 6-speeder clutch disc, so when using 5-speeder you still need to find suitable clutch disc with correct offset for the 5-speeder.
