well i for some reason keep on having a problem with over heating, i have put the M60 rad on there so its huge and even a 16" rad fan but still its getting mighty hot?
is anyone else coming up with this problem? :?
i have its first track day on saturday and i need this sorted :x

well i have taken the supply from one of my fog lights which i dont have anymore so i use the fog switch to manually switch it on and off?

i started off with a e28 535 rad with the biggest fan i could fit in the opening pushing air through the rad but changed it to the huge M60 rad to try and solve the problem but no dice.
crazy but would it be possible to have a air lock at all? if so how can i bleed the air out?

well ill supply the fan with a good guage wire and see what happens, not hopeful though :(
well the rad is getting hot so i guess the thermostat works?
well i thought it was a rad problem so i switched to the M60 which i know was fine and its still the same :(

hmmm you maybe right will,
well when im thinking hot i mean its heading into the dreaded red zone and almost time to switch off.
in traffic acouple weeks back i split a hose at the back of the engine because it was running hot but that might of been a week hose anyway?

The hose at the back of the engine more then likely could have been rubbing, I split a hose twice until I hit the shit out of the firewall!

I had loads of issues with cooling, whilst drifting mind, but slower traffic was a issue. I ran my fan on below 45mph, but normal driving its fine and sits just over half and a constant.

How much of the standard bodywork do you have infront? Its not a pretty picture as I was halfway through the work but this is what i did to mine, all the front apron I cut away so the whole radiator was exposed

I then put 10 holes in thermostat and havent had an issue since with the cooling, only whilst drifting or stationary traffic it creeps a little. But hard/track driving its fine.

Im going to step up to one of these soon as it fits on the existing mounts

cheers for the info phil, well in the end i basically cut the center out of the thermostat, drilled 5 huge holes where the number plate sits and raised the rear of the bonnet (all done at the track side the night before) and its as cool as Eskimos chuff now.
i must of had a seized thermostat.

track day went well though apart from blowing my powersteering to pieces :roll:

i have issues with mine as well, i run no thermostat and twin spal fans on all the time! still hots up after a good thrashing

Yap, the M60 is pretty big heat-source for such a small engine bay as E30 :)

It's beneficial to use some time to think how the air should be directed in the bay, and where to add some flaps to enhance the flow. M3 E30 has almost all "holes" blocked in the front, and the "only" way for the air is to the radiator (of which only 1/4 is exposed)..

I was looking at making a duct for it too, to channel the air into the radiator.
What temps do the M60s normally run at?

Bigger source of heat, small engine bay - that's your fundamental problem. Good news is that you lie in Britain, not somewhere hot so you should be able to sort this problem with a big ass tropical radiator from another E30 / E36. Get some decent oil cooling in there as well and you should be good to go.

Oh, and a proper (80 degree) theormostat...

Keep chipping away at it - great conversion!! :thumb:

I am running the 324td watercooler (identical to the e36 m3 cooler) and a e34 fan without any problems.

The fan starts at 91°C, which happens in traffic jam or after a fast ride.

Only in the alps I got higher temperatures, while climbing the hill... about 100°C water temperature.

Mine seems to run hot, but the stat does not open until 95C i have checked it in the kitchen and its fine, i have a twin fan setup that runs off a relay and the stat in the original M60 rad, when these come on it drops the heat nicely, still not had a long run in it so i cannot say what its like on the motorway.
I have changed the temp sender to an M20 one to match my temperature gauge and it all tallies up.

Just to let you know I also had all the stupid over heating problems but now I've Sussed it! I have a standard engine with a standard thermostat, the e34 header tank and a 14" electric fan, I have binned all the rubbish BMW rads and now have opted for a 3ltr Mitsubishi shogun radiator this fits strait in with out cutting the chassis rails (witch is also a stupid idea) I have cut out a piece of tin behind the front bumper but not the cross member!! but now just sits below half on the temp gauge! I'm a happy man who can now use my car daily and thrash the ass off it with no problems....
