Hi all, I have a m60 6 speed and wondered what the best ratio is for track/drift/fast road driving. I currently have a 3.64 but it's way to low geared I was thinking a 3.15 or 2.97 but wondered what people had?

with my last v8, i had the m3 3.25:1 diff, and thought it was just a tad too low geared.
with the v10, i've fitted a 3.15:1
i think this will suit my requirements just right

it really is way to low geared, I can do about 120 flat out in 6th but I want more and cruising is quite high up in the revs I think I am going to go for the 3.15 ratio! 3.64 would be perfect for just drifting but other than that I wouldn't bother.

I've 3.41 in the cabrio, tops up at 285km/h with 6800rpm rev limit (tested at dyno), pulls nicely all over the rev-band though it's a bit short for highway cruising..

This with 245/35-17 tires.

if you're running a reduced/increased circumferance tire, this will/can alter road speed more than a ratio swap, however here's the tool of choice for ratio selection:

It says with my 17" wheel and a 3.15 diff with a 6 speed box I can pretty much reach up to 185mph 8O
I'd take off into the sunset

Mine tops out at 120-130 ish with a 5speed, no idea the ratio, reckon its a 3.7.... It's shite on the road, well 0-80 is super quick, drifting its perfect but on a long run its the worst thing in the world

I had to make a complete custom exhaust, the manifolds were the hardest part! My exhaust is fairly loud as I have no cat's just two centre silencers and then a backbox but I am going to change the backbox to something that will make it a little better! I also am using an x pipe to increase backpresure.

I sure can, what suspension setup did you go for? I am trying to figure what springs I need for the front poundage wise!

I have a 2.79 it is great for road use, not tried it on a track yet.
My exhaust is really quite, you can happily talk at 70mph revs at 2k ish, until you hit 4k then it roars.
Here is a picture or two.

Image

In the end i just used the 600mm back boxes as the guy at the exhaust shop said using all four will make it far to quiet.

Image

I know its in an 02 but i still have to get round an E30 rear end 8)

Hi 200272, What did you get your 2.79 lsd out of?

It would be a good one for me (although I've already got a 3.07 from an E28 M535i mounted in place).

Have you got a crossover/ balance box in the middle of your set-up? It looks like a nice tidy system, with a good compromise between noise and comfort!

Hi i remember talking to you at Gaydon last year how is the touring?
I got the diff from ebay £250 what a bargain...

I have linked the two pipes up the front.

Cheers.

I was wondering if it was you, and it is! :)

£250 is good, mine cost me £300. Is yours out of a 5 series or a 3 series? How easy was it to fit?

I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to make it to Gaydon this year, as the Touring was not getting much attention lately from the guys working on it. Long story, but let's just say that as of this week things might be picking up progress-wise.

It needs the brakes plumbing in, the final Emerald wiring finishing, exhaust system tweaked, E36 rack fitting and water methanol kit installed. A lot in some ways, but not too bad in other ways!

Hopefully we'll meet again sometime, when mine is up and running.

All the best, Michael.

When running a M60/62 dude it will probably be best with a LSD. Unless your giving them away free winkeye

I can't see that you will distroy a LSD in a hurry just with a standard M60/62 even if you drive the bastard like Colin McCray.
I haven't driven a standard 540 speed with no LSD though. But just remember the 540 is a bardge compared to a E30

Yeah! I'd better stay off the nos as well then, or all the rivets on the floorpan will pop off and I'll change gear 18 times to compensate........ winkeye

Hahaha I was only talking about the Fast and furious flying floor pan just the other day. I was in stitches because the apprentice at work with his little fiesta couldn't understand why I thought it was so funny.

There aren't many films which do a good job of being realistic with engine/ exhaust/ tyre sounds! How many times do you see a car on grass or gravel making squealing tyre noises?!

Some of the much older films do it better, IMO, like Bullit, French Connection. Ronin has some good bits and Gone In Thirty Seconds is great at the start, where they steal the 911 from the showroom.

Mind you, I don't mind watching F&F, or the Transporter films!
