what happens if oil filter shatters to pieces in a e30s50b30
Moderator: martauto
guys i thought my car was done , the guy asked me to pick up and to meet him halfway and before i got there he called me saying it had broken down .
he checked it and says oil filter is in pieces and now i'm not sure what could have happened , to the engine , has it seized or does it shut down once it detects not enough oil is coming through ?
is there any warning it gives before going bust and what parts may i need to replace ?

So the oil filter housing has shattered or is the oil filter is broken up inside?
Have you seen the car? Were you buying it?

no i was not buying its my car that was being built and yes oil filter shattered inside so not sure if oil was going to engine or not as i was not driving it . the car was serviced not long prior to using it as a donor so not sure what to think.

what are the circumstances of the car "breaking down"? Warning lights appearing before it broke down?
If it has broken down due to oil starvation the engine will be knackered, If it was turned off and then diagnosed it may be OK. Who is doing this work? A S50 oil filter element should be made of metal and paper and i cant see it shattering
If it has ground to a halt due to lack of oil pressure, your better off buying a new engine mate
I would be having someone who knows what they are talking about look at the engine before you go any further, as it could well be something caused by the garage it is with now!!

Sounds like BS on behalf of the 'mechanic' to me.
We need pics and a vid of all the grim noises when it is running, a drama shared is a drama doubled ! What I mean't to say was we will then be in a better position to help you solve the issue at hand

Maybe shattered isn't the best description to use?
I have seen several times cheap non genuine paper oil filter elements that haven't been changed for ages crumble and broken up inside.
I've seen it on M54 and N42 engines but not an S50, not to say it isn't possible on one though.

not that car no expense was spared i kept it serviced up immaculately ! so when filters break would oil still go up to the head ? or would it be blocked and totally cooked ? as a mechanic would you not change filters when putting in new oil ?

i have the photos, sorry mate but what a bodge up of a conversion
I would lay money on it being oil pump/pick up related!! the oil filter looks like its been cooked in the oven with no oil!! who done this? and how much are they trying to charge you?
£3k to fit a engine supplied buy you? They have used cast m50 exhaust manifolds (fuck knows how) and bodged just about everything i can seee30s50b30 wrote:its up in nottigham 3 gs is what it cost gees that means engine is defo cooked ?

He means the mechanic or garage when pete says Mr Turpin bud.
Mr Turpin aka Dick Turpin was a highway robber from long ago.
