M3 S50 accelerator cable

Hi,

I have a S50 M3, (brought the car with the lump in) I was just wondering what accelerator cable is used, as I’m thinking of replacing it due to it getting stuck, when the car has been running for a while.

The symptoms are (only when the car is hot... driving for at least half hour)
As i drive and go to change gear, foot off the throttle but car remains revving?
Almost caused me to have a accident the other day, as i took the foot off the throttle to brake, car was still revving at 4000rpm! I have sprayed wd40 around the area, but not made any difference.
Has anyone experienced such a thing?

You may want to inspect the cable. May be a portion of the nylon inner sleeve is damaged causing it to be stuck. I had this problem before. Mine was damaged by heat from the manifold. Got it repaired and everything works fine now. I've routed the cable to avoid the manifold ever since. You may also want to check if the spring at the pedal is still there. BTW I'm also using a shorten M3 cable.

Thanks for the reply, which M3 cable is it? e30 or e36 ? and how did you shorten it?

The E36 one.

There are different ways to shorten the cable. Here's how I did mine. Basically the M3 accel cable has a long rigid end that locks in a cylindrical piece that will attach to the notched plastic piece on the throttle body. You can just remove that end and replace with something similar but shorter, whatever that can lock in the cylindrical piece. I used a small electrical crimp connector and crimped one end to secure it to the cable. That's it. Hope that makes sense. Can't remember exactly how much you have to shorten though. Just measure it.

You can also take it to a shop that can cut and solder to a proper length. I would go this route if I had known a place before.

I cut and soldered mine myself.. Done 4 now, with no issues
