Hi! I am planning on buying an E30 with the M40 engine in it, are they as bad as most people say? The one I'm planning to buy have gone around 170 000 Km. Please tell me down below your thoughts on the engine!

Welcome to the zone mate and they are not bad engines at all ,they are only bad if people let them get that way as in looking after them properly.
Don`t be put off,let someone you know and trust check it out first.
Mart.

No they aren’t. People are just brain dead and only think 6 cyl is good.

Make sure the cam is not worn. It's an expensive repair.

I had M40 in an E36 from 2003 to 2022. I changed oil every year and cam belt every 4 years or 30k miles. I never had any trouble except once had a slight oil leak with the sump gasket. Did not have any issues with cam either.
