As in the tittle, will a gearbox from an e36 M44 engine fit an e30/e36 M42 engine?

It should do but the 5th gear ratio is 1:1 instead of 0.8:1 so will need a longer diff ratio and the gear linkage will be too long/need tweeking.

Might also need the E36 style slave cylinder.

Awesome, so the actual box will fit up to the back of the block? All I was trying to find :)

E30 M42's use a Getrag 240 type gearbox - ribbed outer casing and overdrive fifth.

E36 cars all use a Getrag 250G - smooth casing and 1:1 fith. The 250G is used on the E36 316i, 318i, 318is, 320i, 323i saloons/Coupes and the 325i as well as E34 518i M43 and 520i. It was a 'one size fits all' box, millions about for 50 quid or less.

M44 box will fit an M42 and vice versa.

While on this topic, is there any strength difference between the Gertrag 240 and the 250G?
Currently putting an M44 and 250G box and 3.45 small case diff in the car to get me going.
Just future plans are to try and build an M42 on ITBs :) don't want mad power but love the 4 pots on ITBs noise. And still be a fun drive.
